Agilent (Keysight) U1252b rotary switch issue
« on: January 31, 2026, 07:11:03 pm »
Recently my very much appreciated U1252b multimeter developed a misbehaviour.
I first noticed that the Ohms range sporadically displayed random numbers even if open.
But only when dialed in clockwise, the other direction was no problem.
Later I noticed the mV range was not always selected properly.
I disassembled the meter, checked the wiper contacts again and again, carefully tried to bend them a little bit in case it would have lost  springiness but to no success.
Upon several inspections, I noticed there was some tiny play between the hex shaft and the rotary switch.
Just as an attempt, I wound thin polyester electrical tape around the shaft (see photo) - it still inserts easily and the ranges are now selected correctly.
Easy fix after several approaches.

Hopefully it is fixed up.
But... I would make sure there is no hairline crack in the mating rotor, which makes it look OK but it splays and acts as though stripped.
I have seen it with other multimeters where somebody with a heavy hand turns it fast and it cracks. Not much plastic thickness there. I use a good epoxy cement to fix.

I didn’t notice a crack, what you are probably refering to is the position indicator.
The ranges are also noted in the silkscreen.
During failure tracing I noticed that the screw lugs of the LCD bezel had cracked (as suddenly segments started failing), I fixed that with small pieces of ABS glued in place.

Their handhelds are known to be weak on the range switches. Shame, because they are certainly feature-packed.
