So they recess the USB to prevent a user from coming in contact with it while the meter is connected to a circuit?  Looks like you measured a few kohms between the USB and connectors but I doubt it would handle any sort of transient from the USB to the inputs.

I suspect if you checked the signal input to USB once the resistance, mV, cap ... mode was selected to trip the relay for the PTC/transistor clamp, you could still push a bit of current through the user.

I think there is a reason UNI-T does not allow you to connect the charger on the UT181A and still connect leads to the meter.

We're all dying to see you murder one of these meters. ;)

Maybe Dave would measure his as I show with the AC line and check the current.

Some things are just so bad they are good, so I just purchased one to put on the shelf. No way do I need another meter, but this is a must as it's so ugly.

OK, this one is rubbish, as expected.
Don't worry, there's a suitable Aneng for everyone.  ;)
Perhaps an “auto repair" multimeter would be more interesting?

Apparently it's useful for "experimental site debugging".  I'm not sure if that means you debug the site of an experiment or you experiment with site debugging, but in either case if it can tell me why three drives in a RAID array on a particular site failed within hours of each other I'm sold.

The guy is actually an electrical/electronic engineer. I went to the same university. With "a few" year differences.

:-+

Can't be bothered with that crap either especially when a very plain website as a point of contact offering our wares draws every Asian TE manufacturer but one asking for us to also flog their gear.  :horse:
F off, deleted !

Any guesses to the one that hasn't come knocking on our door ?
BTW, not interested in them either.

if going to the US take only a simple phone with no internet or just get a burnner in the US, that way there is no way they can look at whatever you have said about turnips.

Looks like the "Barbiefication" of test equipment reaches a new height.
Every thing these days needs flashy color displays or graphical TFT's and weird user interfaces.

Test equipment (especially basic stuff like multimeters, power supplies and the likes ) needs to have simple UI that shows what you need without requiring the user to "scan" the display to find what you are looking for.
Those TFT displays on multimeters ( owon ? and even Keysight ) and power supplies are horrendous.

On top of that, a lot of trinkets and cheapo stuff from asia uses those horrendous Times New Roman fonts. They don't render properly, are all jagged. They don't even try to do an anti-aliasing on them ( how could you with a dinky 8-bit cpu without a real graphics core. it's just bit whacking form a ROM stored font. They don't even bother to store scaled versions cause there's not enough rom store.

I long to the days of the Keithley 19x machines and the HP34401 line of machines with VFD displays. Simply, Clear, One button per function.

there is one nice thing about this form factor, if you put it on a ball joint with a heavy platform, it makes a rotatable multimeter. that can be useful if you need to walk around a large benchtop object. Though, you can do that on any multimeter, it just seems like that shape will work well for that.

I found that the tilting bale is a bit too improvised for longer work where its the primary meter.

Say a large cubical object with PCB installed in every which way in every which hole, including upside down PCB. (power electronic device)

I got extremely frustrated with my fluke 289 recently, I wanted it on a pole, attached to a roller cart, including the functionality to tilt downwards if you need to duck to probe something.

But at that point, I would prefer a large box with a mechanical keypad, like a DRO indicator console.

Late 1970's, early 80's was when multimeters last had innovation and creativity with their form factor. Anyone remember?
Poor dinosaur cannot evolve.

My idea: Just put a camera tripod mount on it, I think it's a 1/4-20 nut. Then you can use a bendable octopus mini-tripod and set it up anywhere. There is also the cellphone selfie mounts, and more using magnets.
Such variety in offerings, this is too big but smaller ones are there https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006363751688.html

The trolling is fun and and everything, but I think it's will be more productive to use the fact we have access to the datasheet to render this tool useful by removing all the useless functionality. The format is actually great if you have a small workbench, the screen is very visible, just need to organize the menu better, also the standby time should be modifiable , it will be a great simple multimeter (continuity by default second mode voltage third resistance)

Another Hell Ish  meter   Xin Tester XT-R2

Holtek display driver

the other ? is it an CR216 ?

the green ring is the dial you rotate for functions,   flimsy and imprecise, the meter functions are / or sometime jumps,  you do have the 2 top row  buttons to up or down for the functions

a 2024 pcb design ?

probes are basic,  kinda stiffer than the Aneng,   come in a practical pouch with zipper all around,  medium quality

i would never push 20 Amps in theses, Aneng is 10 Amp

i would love  to hack the Aneng  for the serial interface    and  be able to power it up once connected to the usb c port ... i need to figure out or draw partial schematic(s)
