BM786 vs Fluke 77 vs ?

Thinking about doing a shootout between the Fluke 77-IV and the BM786, which are direct competitors in terms of look and feel and size.
Is there another meter that would be the same size, shape, and overmoulded case design?

There are a number of CEM meters which might be worth comparing against. The quality and price point will obviously differ but you can get a 40k count CEM on Ebay.au for only $100.

I want something that specifically looks and feels the same.
The BM780 series was obviously desingned to look like and compete with the 70 series.

I would also look at the Gossen line - the Metrahit World seems on par with the other two in terms of functions and overall arrangement of buttons, etc.

The Amprobe AM-530 is quite on par with the 179 as well (I had both at a certain point), although it seems the 37XR-A is more popular.

Yeah, it would. I only have the 77IV to hand.

Other two that you might consider for the comparison: UT191T and UT195E - both are quite on par w.r.t. features and form factor.

I recently got a UT89X from their renewed product line and it is incredibly well built - mechanically speaking.

Hi ! Besides the features+performance comparison, it would be nice to see a teardown comparison so we can understand how mature and reliable is the design of the fluke 170 series and why it costs much more than the newer brymen bm78x.

The closest matches on my list are the Amprobe 38XR-A and B&K 2709B which I would like to see reviews of anyway.  The Uni-Trend models I have considered do not measure up.

The Fluke 77-IV and BM786 are not meters I have considered for purchase because their terminal arrangement is poor.

Yup, I saw the video before seeing this topic. I totally agree with those reasons, but those are ethical (moral) ones. I would have loved to see practical engineering reasons by putting them side by side (features, performance, teardown, mechanical  & pcb design). They say "the devil is in the details" !

If you want to compare something similar to the 70/170 series Flukes then perhaps you should also consider a few of the Chauvin-Arnoux meters, they certainly look like a Fluke both in appearance and specification, I don’t think that’s by chance either.

I guess it's not direct competition but I would like to see a review of any of the Yokogawa especially the higher end. I use Fluke but generally I don't have to pay for them. With my own money I am thinking of a Yokogawa.

Sorry for disagreeing on this.

The AM-530 is a crap! The auto power off can't be disabled, and the meter turns off after 15 minutes, even if you are using it, and can't be disabled. It's very slow, specially when reading capacitors, and the one I have at work has having issues lately, with random readings that goes away if turned off and back on again. I wouldn't recommend this meter to anyone.
The Amprobe AMP-220 clamp meter that I also have at work, I'm very pleased with, so it's not a brand thing.
I don't know about the other 500 series Amprobe meters, but that particular model is disappointing.

The Fluke 179... I also have one, but don't think I have to say something on it's behalf.

PS: The AM-530 wont turn auto-power-off when MAX/MIN button is pressed, but in recording mode it will only show the MAX or Min value, so it doesn't keep track of the average value, neither show the actual value being measured. This is the worst implementation of a recording feature I ever came across

With the 1k in series with the 1.3k PTC, your going to be hard pressed to stress any MOV in normal use.  Even with all of my abuse, I've never see one change to where I could measure it.    Of course, not all meters are the same....
