Choice of two oscilloscopes: HP 54542A or Lecroy LeCroy 9354TM
« on: January 30, 2025, 07:59:12 pm »
Looking for a 500MHz scopes and I'm willing to repair either one.

Studied both models specs and both are very similar.

HP 54542A might need battery backed cell replaced based on the issue symptoms only that calibration failed.

Lecroy 9354TM might need more work, passes internal tests and calibration except channel 3 input is not generating signal.
And slow to respond to button inputs.   CRT has burned in where lines and text had been there for long time but still usable.
Seller's description says:
"The unit passed POST, self test, internal calibration & diagnostics. Performed verification test and passed (but not all done due to lack of matching equipment). Being sold for parts due to CH 3 Input not working (doesn't generate any input signals, all other channels are working). And, the unit responds time very slow. There is a delay of 5 to 10 seconds before any input commands shows up on the display screen. "

Had tried to search here and internet searches related to repair or mods on this Lecroy 9354TM and I came up nothing.   Hopefully anyone knows these could respond.
Lecroy has several sub models for the 9354 including 9354A.

Thanks for your responses.

Cheers,

Seriously???  #2 link from a google of "lecroy 9354 service manual" is:

(Instead of repairing an old scope, I'd get an entry-level Rigol and Siglent 4channel 500MHz scope.)

Good suggestion, but the cost is 5 to 8 times costly for Siglent or Rigol when one factored in the Canadian pulp paper, aka toughest, colourful plastic sheets.

These used either one, can snatch one for around 300-400 CDN, shipping cost included.

Besides, I enjoy repairing these as money comes in over time.

I'd look for one of the Tektronix TDS500 or TDS700 series (don't buy the TDS600 series as these don't have peak detect!).
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.
