Hello,
Recently I was looking at getting a lower-cost high current AC/DC probe. I found Pico's TA167, R&S's HZO51, or I could use an older Tek current probe and their CT-4 adapter.

I can't seem to find any derating info for either the Pico or R&S's probes. The manuals are rather sparse in terms of graphs. Are they not based on a coil that needs derating?

Tek's CT-4 is very very detailed. But how do I power the DC Bucking Coil? Like, they give a voltage/amperage, but that's spec'd per DC amp and I have no clue how to power the DC Bucking Coil with the appropriate frequency/amplitude DC value so that I get the correct response for DC current. Although their older probes can measure DC current, is the CT-4 designed to only measure AC current?

Thanks!

PS: When I say "DC current" I'm referring to pulsed DC. I'm not planning on using an oscilloscope to measure continuous DC current. I'd use a clamp meter for that.

The tek CT-4/CT-5 is AC current only and needs a current probe (A6302 or P6021).  The DC bucking coil kills off the magnetic field from a continuous DC current in the conductor.  It's driven by a CC/CV supply.  If you need DC response at high current, you'd want the Tek A6303 along with the AM503 amplifier and the 500 series power supply.  It's an expensive and temperamental solution.

Okay, what about the Pico's TA167 and R&S's HZO51? I couldn't find any derating info for them in the manuals. I'll happily reach out to them, but before I do so does anyone have some info on the derating of those probes?

Thanks!

Derating of what? They're low (kHz) frequency probes and will probably have no issue withstanding higher frequency at the rated current.
