CMU200 tracking generator?
« on: May 21, 2015, 06:28:19 pm »
Question for those with a R&S CMU200:

The CMU200 has a signal generator that covers the full range of the unit.  Can it be configured to act as a tracking generator for the spectrum analyzer?  I can't find this in the operation manual if it can.

Thanks,
David

No, it can't.The generator can't sweep, and there's no functionality to track the spectrum analyzer frequency window.

In theory you could connect the CMU200 to a PC via serial/GPIB, and write a program that steps the generator through the bandwidth you want, but considering that the generator needs some time to stabilize after each frequency change (as well as the time needed for the SA to record the signal) this will be painfully slow.

I've done some testing since I first asked this question and my results closely mirror your comments.  Here are my measurements:

- Over serial at 115200 baud, generator can be tuned to 20 frequencies/sec.
- Same test + taking a power measurement: 15 frequencies/sec.

This could work, but it's definitely not real time.

Would you mind posting some code for this? I would like to give this a go also...

Hi, could you please share the code because I'm interested to test
Thanks
