Extech MM570A High Accuracy Multimeter
« on: March 16, 2014, 06:58:25 pm »
I received my new multimeter Friday, (Like I need another multimeter) which adds to my growing collection of DMM's. I must say, based on my initial tests, this unit is very nice! It's basically a 6 digit, 500,000 count High Accuracy DMM with some impressive features and specs! With an accuracy of .02% between 500mV and 5V and .04% at 500V, .05% at 1000V, this DMM is pretty damn stable. It's build well and very solid. So far putting it up against my Fluke 289 and Agilent 34401A it tracking within a couple microvolts. One really nice feature is the ability to measure both AC and DC at the same time, this could be very useful. It also allows you to set the dBm impedance value from 4 to 1200 Ohm, also a nice feature. I also bought the RS232 cable and software which allows it to become a data logger, although the Agilent DMM suite is much better, the Extech logging software (which is 3rd party) is not bad. There is a lot more great features, but I need more time to go through everything.

I will chime in from time to time once I put it through it's paces but for now I can say that this DMM is very nice for the price!

You can thank Brymen for that :P

Is that model a Brymen? I was wondering that. I know Extech does not make many of their products, they just rebrand. The FLIR division does but I think FLIR was the one that bought Extech Instruments.

Brymen 859 also sold as the Greenlee DM-860 (not to be confused with the DM-860A which is the Brymen 869)

Except for the back lights on the older models such as the rebranded MM570, and one possible user error, I have never seen any real complaint about Brymen meters. You should be happy with it for a long time.

Yeah, I am not very keen on that backlight either. It's not a show stopper but a minor irritant. I was not very happy with the backlight on the Fluke 289 too. It was not as crisp as I anticipated. Again, a minor irritant.

My BM857 is non-latching and can be scratchy sounding. Fortunately, this is fixable with a good quality lead set (got better with Agilent leads, vanished with Probemaster leads).

Nanofrog, that is good to hear; I have a decent set that is still minimally scratchy on my '857 (IIRC it is the same NOS from ebay as yours) but I know now which set I will get when this one dies.

In the USA, the pamona 5519a are top notch quality leads at a great price ($14 at Frys)

I don't have a set of these to test, so I don't know how well they'd be for this particular issue.

FWIW, the Probemaster's are gold plated (23kt), so they don't oxidize easily.

Gotta love US: sooo cheap and so convenient when compared to the rest of the world... I am very lucky to have a Fry's store five minutes away from home.

I have Pomona cables connected to these probes, which are not bad at all.

My MM570A came with very nice leads. Silicon rubber, very flexible, well formed tips and gold plated with tip guards. This leads were as good or better than my Fluke leads.

Those are the same as the Agilent probes I have (no idea who actually manufactures them). Leads (wire/cables) that came with them is 14AWG silicone. Decent, but a bit stiff vs. the 18AWG you'll find on others (i.e. flexible as a wet spaghetti noodle).

Are these the ones you have?
Not quite (link is for 2mm banana versions), but the probe body and wire are the same for the 8000 series.

What I have are a set from each of the following:
8000 series (8043S, basic kit)
9000 series (9104S, electronics kit)
Spring Loaded/Pogo Leads (8151, kit)

Tried the electronics kit (has a better value than Fluke or Pomona's equivalent kits), really pleased with it's quality, so bought the others. Got the RT. angle 8043S for poking around under the car, but straight retractable's for bench use as they work with more instruments (idea is to prevent having to re-terminate or buy new leads to work with future equipment).

I agree on the stiffness, but since my LCR meter came with these and a full set of other accessories (including this other one that I use in my Fluke 179), I can't complain. BTW, I am almost sure they are manufactured by CEM, as my LCR is also from them (or a rebranded Reed R5001).

Nice sets. I'll keep an eye when mine bite the dust.
