"Factory" shipped used scopes...
« on: May 03, 2020, 01:34:20 am »
Obviously I'm in the market for a new/used scope with cal / warranty etc.

Figure that the new prices of the 'ideal' scope (would be a one-time purchase and many years of use for me) are just incredibly inflated on 'big' mainstream brands.

So I decided to look on KS website, where they list their 'used' gear with a 30 day warranty.

Found an MSOX2024A which was going for $2200USD. Ooh I thought. converts to about 3.3Kaud. still seems 'reasonable-ish' for 200mhz 4 channel.

Blurb looks OK, So I start to do some in-depth research, but it was getting a little vague. So I thought get a quote! they even have a button to click on -  makes it easy for them to 'capture their customer' - they will email me a 'quote', provided I sell them all my personal information...  :palm:

I had some trouble trying to work out what Keysights TLA's are in their one-pagers for the used gear, and eventually found some info on the SW bundle, but not all of their TLAs.

everything I could read was making this look "more reasonable", by that I mean the price wasn't stupid, but it wasn't exactly sharp either... I'm sure there is room..

Then I realized my error. *noob mistake*

NO probes included.

so 4x N2889A @ 228aud ea
1x N2791A @ 1065aud
1x 1146B @ 1098aud

Not a bargain anymore.  Probes actually double the price of the instrument.
So yeah.  Looks like I made the noob mistake alright.

Lost my appetite for a scope.

I'm learning rapidly why Australia is such a ripoff for any test gear, used or new, or even ancient useless gear. Small market, huge markups, huge taxes and -- screw the individual trying to get ahead by finding gear that will last a lifetime, that isn't a pipedream.

Guess I'm a fool.
regards,
Hacksaw.

These probes are very expensive and not very special. You can find new (unused and with warranty) general purpose alternatives for 5 to 10 times less money.

There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Excuse me, but :wtf: made you think that high voltage differential probe and current probe would be cheap? And they don't come with any new oscilloscopes.

I think you missed my point.
adding the probes double the price of a used scope.
a New scope comes with the 4 normal probes plus the logic probe, for less $ at full RRP than the used one with the two HV probes. (plus warranty etc)
By that ordinance, the two HV probes aren't going to be cheap, but there was no implied statement that they should be. What I said was adding the probes to a perceived 'bargain' used scope doubles the price.
Adding two HV probes to a new scope agreed, gets pricey. But I'm sure that pricing on new probes with a new scope would be a lot more 'flexible'.

You are comparing apples with oranges. If you compare old scope + new probes VS new scope, then you should compare with accessories which actually come with new scope. Logic probe costs around $600.

$2200 + 4x $145 + $600 != $4000 (new scope)

Really? then ask quotation for new scope + additional probes.

Hi,

There are two MSOX2024A offerings on eBay.

One is

US $1,789.20

This for the bare scope, no probes, no power cord

There is another listing

 US $2,171.20

This includes the DSOX2APPBNDL

The application bundle includes:

Purchase option DSOX2APPBNDL to enable all of the InfiniiVision 2000 X-Series software applications listed below. View the Options and Accessories tab for details on each application.
•DSOX2AUTO Automotive trigger and analysis (CAN/LIN)
•DSOX2COMP Computer trigger and analysis (RS232/UART)
•DSOX2EMBD Embedded trigger and analysis (I²C/SPI)
•DSOX2MASK Mask limit testing
•DSOX2WAVEGEN Integrated 20 MHz function generator

This is normally around $1500.00 USD.

If you value the contents of the APPBNDL this may be the better deal.

Nope, just inexperienced when it comes to selecting test equipment however you're in the right place to get good advice.
Best thing you can do is start again with a list your requirements along with any accessories that also might be required.

Specialized probes are always expensive. If you need stuff like current probes and differential probes or other esoteric stuff you'll usually spend more on probes than you spend on the scope. Scopes that include a set of probes typically include the sort of basic 10x passive probes that you can buy for under $30 each. The low cost hobbyist market scopes include $5 probes.

You can get a lot of scope for less than what you're budgeting though if you take the time to figure out what you need and are content to gamble on used gear or buy stuff that isn't A-list brands.

You are literally expecting to get free active probes from a scope purchase?
If you are into differential/current probes, expect probes to be more expensive than scopes. That's just norm.
My last lab purchase consists of 6 scopes and ~20 probes, and the 20 probes easily costed more than twice the 6 scopes.

When you climb the ladder of higher end, you will easily find out software options or hardware accessories easily add up to several times the cost of the base hardware itself.
This is just how IP-intensive high tech community works.

If you want a differential probe at a good price Dave sells the Sapphire brand, which is actually the OEM of differential probes for Keysight and a number of other big name T & M equipment manufacturers. They are a good price as well.

I don’t know your knowledge level or anything, but if you are new to the electronics don’t worry active/differential probes for now and spend the money on some good books.
