So I went ahead and ordered one of the inexpensive fluke 101 basic multimeters, and I gotta say, I kinda like it. It fills a very specific niche, namely, I want all of my money going towards fluke level of safety and features are secondary (tertiary, even). The thing is built as solid as any fluke and is perfect for my camping go-bag next to my butane soldering iron, it is just about right for what may come up unexpectedly on the road, generally always power circuit voltage testing or continuity testing are what is needed and safety is vital when possibly out of range of any help. It does have the unusual omission of a DC mV range.
I tested it up to 600V (it's cat III rating) and it had no issues, nor did it have any problems with all ranges plugged into a wall socket. No doubt it could survive a lot more.
I also kind of like the placement of the leads, it lets me directly connect it to things temporarily and see the screen. A handy robust temporary panel meter.
