Fluke 8842A that is in "touch and hold" mode.
« on: November 23, 2019, 05:37:41 pm »
I have a Fluke 8842A that measures correctly but appears to be in a " touch and hold" mode. If I measure a DC voltage and than remove the voltage source, the reading remains displayed until I short the test leads and only then does the reading return to or near to zero volts. It does this when in auto range or manually selected ranges. When in ohms mode, all works as should and returns to infinity. Does anyone know what causes this? Has anyone had the same problem with a Fluke 8842A or 8840A?

  • Yeah, cool.

This is because of the very high input inpedanca. You basically charge the input and its capacitancy keeps the voltage, like a sample and hold circuit.
This is only up to the 20V range, above that it has much lower impedance.
This is completely normal.

Thanks LazyJack, I'll do some further testing to verify that and see if it does it on a higher range setting not using auto mode.

You can also see that by touching the test leads, the reading will go to zero.
