any experience with Amprobe 37XR DMM?
« on: April 25, 2014, 12:53:50 am »
I have an Amprobe 34XR that is a decent basic meter.  It lacks a couple of features that I want:

  • it's only 4,000 count
  • it doesn't do relative measurements
  • the capacitance range only goes down to 4 uF

I'm thinking of buying an 37XR which is 10,000 count and has a bunch more features.  They seem to go for around $150 online.

Anyone have any experience with this meter? Anything to look out for?

Thanks

If you can put up with a limited true RMS bandwidth, below average voltage resolution, no mF range, no temperature measurement and no PC connection, it's not a bad meter, if a little expensive.

Since I also live in Canada, I understand the gouging pricing challenges we have.

I managed to get two brand new Meterman 37XRs for about $30 USD each.  I don't have them anymore, but they were fine meters for $30.  At $150, you have more choices.

For $150, I suggest you check your local kijiji for a Fluke 87V.  Don't be shy in making offers on them despite the asking price.  The 87V is 20,000 count in high resolution mode, supports relative and measures up to 10,000uF.  Getting a 87V for $150 will require patience though.

PS. Dave did a video review of the 37XR way back in episode #6 (right around the time I discovered the channel).

If you happen to live in Mississauga, this is a good alternative to Fluke 87V for $150.

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-tool-other/mississauga-peel-region/extech-570a-true-rms-1000vac-meter/585871181?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

The Extech 570A is a rebranded Brymen meter.  It is 500,000 count and there is a lot of information on it on eevblog including reviews, teardowns and videos (including one from Dave below).

FWIW, I just got an 87-V yesterday locally on craigslist for 150 on the nose, 170 asking price. The market's pretty saturated, you can get brand new in packaging 87Vs on ebay for under $200, and lightly used no packaging they go for anywhere between $120 on the best of days to that $200 mark. If you keep a lookout, you can definitely do it.

Edit: But holy crap, for $150 go buy that Extech on kijiji NOW! 5.5 digit handheld?! That's just great!

If you happen to live in Mississauga

Thanks for the lead.  I emailed him and this is a definite possibility.  I would have to have it mailed, but that's not too bad.

I did see Dave's original (episode 6) review of the 37XR.  He seemed to like it well enough, except for the slow continuity response.

I'm curious if there's a reason the Amprobe 37XR and 38XR aren't on the super-duper DMM matrix.  It seems like they would be likely candidates based on the criteria.

Thanks all.

If you don't mind disclosing your city, I can look through the kijiji listings and make other suggestions?

No reason really, they just escaped my initial scan of the Amprobe meters. Will be added shortly.

Cool.  Thank you.  It really is useful to see all the direct comparisons in one place.
