I am looking for a good first oscilloscope. Is the GOS-6112 worth $120?

I'd say no, I'd sell you one for $100 and be quiet happy. It's not a bad scope, a bit complex for a first scope. Though, with it not having an "auto" button, it forces you to learn how to use a scope properly. I think you can find better for not much more if you take your time and search search search.

Ugh that's bad news. I've been searching for an oscilloscope for a while now and my limited budget has really left me, well, limited. I'll keep looking, thank you very much.
If it WORKS properly and forces you to learn ALL it's functions, I'd say it's a no brainer WINNER at $120
I wish I could have had a deal like that back in the day
More likely he feels shafted after lugging a POS 'first' scope home, that gave no love
There are quite a few of those GOS-6112 scopes on ebay right now. It does almost seem like too much for a first scope, but there are some tempting deals. The most risky part might be whether it gets packed adequately or not.

The cheaper the scope, the cheaper the packing in most cases, even though transit costs the same.
Pick it up yourself, or risk a scorched pocket
My first scope had a shipping charge of $2. On there was $60 of stamps. I only paid 80 bucks for the whole thing. Packaged beautifully?.
I got my GOS-6112 for $90 shipped and am very happy with it. Mine came wrapped in a crap load of bubble wrap and looks hardly used. There was even extra cardboard stuffed in the box on the side where the knobs were. Personally, I don't think it's a bad deal for $120. If you get it and want the manual, PM me, I have a scanned file from an original manual.
There is one on eBay right now with a starting bid of $80 with no bids and 10 hours left. I don't know where you are located but it's in Jacksonville, FL and only $24 shipping to my zip in central FL. You might want to check it out and see what shipping is to you. Seller also offers 14 day return. Here is the link:

analog scopes under $100 are plentiful... digital in that price range requires a bit of patience and looking...
I've bought 3 or 4 TDS340 and 340A scopes for $100 or less, one needed a diode replaced in the power supply, one had lost the calibration constants due to a dead battery in the DS1644, the other worked perfectly. All needed a good cleaning but there was nothing seriously wrong with them and they weren't hard to find. I've seen a number of others I could have grabbed but I have all the scopes I need and everyone I know who wanted a scope has one now.

you are lucky. all i've seen are "for parts" TDS dso's on ebayy, and people always bid them up too high...
All of you are luckier in your part of earth,
most scopes here are overpriced and or rooted
and there can't be so many sellers flogging test gear that can't fire up a scope 'to test', that's straight up BS
i.e. they are stuffed crap bought at auctions and or scopes never fixed and doing the rounds being resold.
also bought by dumbass cheapskate newbs that resell them or give up on playing wannabee tech or EE career boy,
and then these phools buy a DSO nano and contemplate self harm trying to get a working trace
This is why I emphasize to pay a seller for a guaranteed WORKING scope and pick it up yourself.
When I want to move a working scope to finance food or extreme entertainment, my ad reads
ANY TEST WELCOME
There are quite a few sellers on ebay who do nothing but equipment disposal for companies.
Just look for the ones selling different versions of the same brand all at once. One of the
Scopes I linked, the seller had listed a TDS340A, a TDS360, a TDS380 and a TDS420A
All at the same time. That doesn't sound like a want to be EE in the making to me.
Look and think ...
Some of you are seriously making me think I should list my GOS-6112 on here for $100. I guess I may be spoiled with my four scopes, I don't even use the GW, it looks brand new.
