help deciding what shall I buy with 1K$ budget
« on: March 27, 2013, 08:26:38 pm »
hey

I don't know what is the proper "board" or what is the proper title for that topic - please tell me what's right  :palm:

so I have 1K$ for *real* needs

(I know that 1K for begginer/advance is A-lot and so will be my treatment :)  )

and I struggle to tell what shall I buy with it ...  |O

so lets list you the gear I have and I hope you'll be able to spot me what I shall get

I have :

fluke 87V

fluke 287

HP3478A

E3610A

DSOX2002A ( A gift from my father - I am awaiting for scope since I got into that , so I really appreciate my father's gift , Indeed Huge input to my lab and it seem like it will last decade easily :)   )

I got some good ATX hacked power supply ( can handle 30+A on each of the rails easly and safly - Tested  :-+ )

in the scope I got the function Gen as well hence I'll say I've got 20Mhz gen too :)

and some good old-but seem to be with in cal 0_0 kenwood 40Mhz analogue scope :P

Goot Gun soldering iron ( 20W-200W) _Chissel head though :P

lots of screw drivers and side cutters etc ..

and I guess that's it  :-//

my thought's :

blue rubber mat ( like dave's )- 120$ ( the shipping is 80$ !!! )

HP6002A ( the 200W and 10A capabillitis are necesar ) -150$

horaizon 36V~2.5A -160$

2X64 component cabin ( around 40$ each - 80$ total)

and I think of getting one more meter ... I have got 3 options in my head :

(1) getting 33,000 count voltage meter ( 8.99$) and configure it to be switchable - 33V range and 330V range should be good enough )

(2) getting good fluke 27 -FM (the yellow one ) for about 50~80$

(3) maybe buying one more hp3478A ?  :-// ( somewhere between 120$~150$(?) )

I shall mention I already have :

2100PCS resistor kit ( 1/4W )

like 20 op07's

signal transistor assortment kit ( the cheap 180 pcs one )

and some junk box of course :P

I think of getting :

100-1M 1turn pot 10 Value 100pcs trim pot kit - 9.79$

ceramic cap 25 Value 20 each 500 Pcs -5.98$

100X LM358-5.89$

100X2n3906 ( already got 100pcs of the 2n222 ) -2.99$

100X2n3904-2.99$

Total cash =458$

I think of saving the rest for future projects - what do you think ?

and I think that's it .... what do you think ?

thank you in advace :)

Forget another meter for now, you are covered.
Is that Goot soldering iron a proper temp controlled station? If not, get yourself a good iron, and an SMD hot air gun.
An LCR meter would be a good investment.
As would a decent microscope.

hey

thank you gibbled and dave :P

I dont feel like I whant to eatch my own board yet , I like prototyping with bear wier and soldering board :)

I know I am "coverd" but when meassuring temp ... well you left with "only" two meter ... hence I thought about getting another one ...

the goot is simple plug into the wall shit ,though I can struggle with it for now because I really whant to invest on things I really don't have .

SMD hot air gun is good idea , but I don't have the need for it though .

LCR meter will be good for any switching project and power supply maybe handy as well , I'll think about it - thank you :)

as for microscope , nope , I thought about X8~10 diopter maggie lamp for soldering Job ( I still got good eyes )

and for reading really small silk screen on small parts ... 25$ USB microscope (X200 ! ) will do

what equipment shall I  be looking for ?

except from the two power supplies I cant see any other needed equipment - Am I wrong ?

since I am not yet in micros etc , I dont need MSO or logic analizer yet ,

ad per the other gear , spectrum analizer, network analizer and arbitry wavform gen, as well are not necesar, I guess - any other type of equipment ?

thank you in advance :)

Saving account. If you don't know what you need, just get started, you'll find soon enough. It might be parts, uC tools, hand tools, instruments, whatever. But when a project needs something you don't have, it is nice to have some money.

Yes, you need a real soldering station.
To have a $1K budget and not consider getting a proper soldering iron is just silly IMO.
And a hot air gun will only set you back $60 or so. Handy for all sorts of stuff including heatshrinking.

Another vote here for 'none of the above'. What you need is a project to work on, and that'll show you what other kit (if any) you require.

You might end up spending it on CAD software, or 3D printing, or PCB manufacture.

Spend 1k on a high class hooker for an evening. The event will stay with you forever.

A fluke DMM and a whiz bang sodder iron will not.

+1  :-+

Spend what you really need which is not always "now", and do not spend off the money for the sake of spending.  :palm:

It is so obvious you are not in need of something, or not very sure what it is, hence this thread was created. Put a restraint and wait abit longer until you are very confident by your own on what and why you have to buy something.

I think of dremel tool - what is you're recommandetion ? and how much shall I put into that tool ?

lol , hooker ? are you kidding ? *NEVER* !  :-DD

I'll seriously think about getting good soldering station , whether it's weller or fx888 or so on. as per two of those , the anoying 120V vertion is only avalible ! other wasy pay almost 200$ for one freaking soldering iron ! then why shall not I buy freaking JBC one like dave's ?  LOL !

I think of getting 220 to 110V transformer for 32$ and then getting the 120V vertion of weller for 83$ ( is that real genuine weller ? or clone ? 0_0 (amazon link below)

http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WES51-Analog-Soldering-Station/dp/B000BRC2XU/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1364459428&sr=1-1&keywords=weller

I do know I need two power supplies hence they are gonna be bought , as for the blue rubber mat - good investment I'll say :P

well , I guess I'll begin do the project's I was so tight to :P

let's begin with 300W Dummy load and then the horaizon power supply ( new thread will be invested for that supply :) )

Do you think I shall upgread my scope ? or adding something ?

do I need the 200Mhz on power supply projects ? or can 350Mhz old combie scope ( 4Ch ! ) flopy one do the job when I'll need him  ? ( about 400$ +10$ shipping  )

do you think I shall put real money on some High end power supply ( agilent branded ) or the two mentioned above shall do the job ? ( I think they are buy I must ask you too :P )

thank you in advance :)

Good soldering station, hot air station, function generator, desoldering tools, LCR meter. Another multimeter is a waste until you get these things.

hey

thanks - I already got function gen , desoldering tools are not yet needed , the hot air gun in my opinion is last priority , soldering station - I thought about weller (120V ) and 220 to 110V transformer ( total of 110$)  and then you say I shall think of one more meter ? 0_0

bear it in mind that I can get it for only 8.99$ plus 10$ parts ><"

Let me see. Many people have said to get a hot air station, and a good soldering station, and what goes with this? A desoldering spring loaded pump, desoldering wick, and some other tools. Why ak for advice if you just ignore it?

I missed the function generator you already have. NO, you do nt need another multimeter yet, for a long time. An LCR meter would be much more useful than a new multimeter. USB logic analyzer would be a useful thing too. Electronic load? Maybe...

and I am sorry for not mention I already got soldering pump ,as for flux pen and vacume pump etc . not needed for now :P

sorry for being not clear  :palm:

thank you :)

desoldering tools are not yet needed

I'd really reconsider this..

Dude, a flux pen won't break the bank, they're fairly/extremely useful.

If you're going to be stubborn about flux, I swear to god I will find your address and mail you a goddamn flux pen. You'll thank me later.  ;)

Sometimes, it's better to just crack on and build some things, and as you work out that you need more stuff, decide then what variant of it you need.

Now, I just need a second (input) half of a load pull set up. Solid state or mechanical?

Again....Why waste our time if you are just going to reject all advice? Come back when stop thinking you know better than the people of whom you are asking advice.
