Ikegami 1.5kV +/- DC Power Supply
« on: January 19, 2014, 12:11:06 am »
I was out at my local electronic surplus store today and ran across a great little power supply. It's an Ikegami 1.5kV Variable DC power supply capable of producing up to 3 Amps and +/- DC voltages up to 1.5kV. Only paid 20 dollars for it and it works great. Checked the output and it was spot on! The variable voltage controls are very precise and allow +/- 1 volt increments. Solid build and very clean inside, only a little dusty dirt around the HV cables as to be expected. Caps look good and resistors ar .1% and .01% precision values. I will do some better High Resolution images of the internal boards hopefully tomorrow. Could not find this unit on the web anywhere so it is definitely a specialized piece of equipment. Pretty excited about the find, needed to fill that voltage void I had, and it does that and more.

Nice - but lethal! Play carefully.

Edit - I'm curious that the output looks like a BNC, it can't be surely?

I am well aware of the potential and yes it has a BNC output. I have seen this before on an old John Fluke 1kV power supply in the past. There was obviously a reason for this and I could easily charge this to another connected, but I think it was a BNC style for a reason. If anyone, knows, please comment on this.

probably MHV. the high voltage variant of BNC.
this psu must be fun at full load.

It isn't a 3A power supply - it would need a 40A mains lead. I doubt it will be more than 10 or 20mA.

it could be wun hung lo style.
can't really see inside so it could attempt to pull as much current as it takes to fry it.

MHV, Bingo! Looked it up, and it matches. That is what it is.

MHV connectors are pretty standard on lab gear in this kind of voltage range.

I didn't know Ikegami ever made this kind of gear. I only associate the name with broadcast video cameras, VTRs and related stuff. Makes me wonder if this thing was part of a burn-in/aging setup for camera pickup tubes or something.

Agreed on the current rating. NO WAY can a device that size pump out 3A at 1.5 kV....

Was going to comment that 3A seems high - some other folks are on the ball!

Have seen a 40kV supply which used something which looked cursorily like an N-type connector, except the center conductor was inset 3~4 inches :)

Yeah, the 3A was high. I was under the impression from the guy I bought it from it was but after tearing it down and playing around with it, looks to be about 25-30mA. It still perfect for what I need.

Sorry, my bad, should have not jumped the gun and did my tests first!

The teardown is coming... I had to spend some time with the family this weekend. I did get a couple replies back from a senior engineer from Ikegami in New Jersey, he thinks it may be a special unit directly out of Japan. He also stated that he has never seen this unit pass through the Jersey office. With a serial number of 0099 and being a 4 digit my guess is that these units were limited and probably not for production sale but as an internal piece of test gear. Depending on how many were made, they could be fairly rare.

I'll try and setup my Nikon D7000 or Canon HF-G10 to shoot the teardown so the quality is better.
