Keysight 1000 X-Series Oscilloscope FRA patch coming
« on: May 29, 2017, 06:28:26 am »
Hi all,

FYI, R&D is working on increasing the frequency response analysis on the 1000 X-Series to go up to 50 points per decade. It won't be an official numbered release but a patch. This way we can get the FRA upgrade out faster. It's not ready yet, but I'll post a link on this thread to a download on an FTP/dropsite as soon as it's available.

I've asked this before, but I'll ask it again here - can we please have an FRA option for the 2000-X series?

Does the FRA do a bandpass filter to help in noisy DUTs? The digital tuned port?

Sent from my horrible mobile....

What is the status on the firmware fixes for the 3000T?

Hi all, today's a US holiday, but I'll check this week on the 3000T fw.

For the FRA measurement, I know we did some secret sauce stuff to get more accurate readings. The 2000 X-Series isn't currently slotted to get FRA as far as I know.

I recently got the updates for the 6000x and the FRA was a big part of that update. Sadly, I have not yet had the time to rig a loop response test on one of my SMPS designs to see how it is improved. The original version could not deal with the broadband noise found in an SMPS circuit. I was, however, able to manually work through the averaging and math filtering to (very slowly) gather the gain / phase margins. If that effort has been automated in the application - it will be sweet. A true FRA is a tremendously expensive piece of gear that I would use 5-6 days per year. While the dedicated FRA's from Venable and even the Bode 100 are more accurate and capable - I don't feel the need for it and they range from $5k+ to $20+k to purchase. The VNA route that can support the lower frequencies is the Agilent E5061B with the low frequency option is $28k+ used.

Needless to say - having this feature is awesome even if it is less capable than a true dedicated FRA with tuned ports and high-dynamic range. It gets me far closer than I could by simulation and guessing.

Thanks Daniel.  I'm really looking forward to trying out the Manchester decode/trigger.  If it works for my application then it will save me several days of hacking together a custom doodad to do the same.

Hi everyone,

The patch code is downloadable here: http://bit.ly/Patch1000XFRA

This patch allows users to set the FRA points-per-decade to 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 instead of just 10. It's not an official firmware release, meaning the scope won't ship with this code and hasn't been tested with the full stringency we use for a normal firmware release. But, the only code that has changed is for the FRA.

Install via thumb drive, no unpacking or unzipping is needed.

Feedback is appreciated, enjoy!

Well it has installed fine, I will now need to figure out a reason to use it  ;)

BTW the scope is a great improvment over my Hantek, I like being able to turn a knob and get a response!

Thanks Daniel.

I wonder if Julian Ilett is aware of this update?
He found the FRA to be too coarse when analysing the bandpass filters in his Vocoder project so maybe this will help by giving him more points.

Yep, I sent it to him. I'm curious to see if this helps or if he needs even higher resolution. Audio stuff has some pretty serious filters.

The resolution is probably pretty good now but the ability to use the FRA across a smaller range of frequencies might be more useful for those of use who live in the sub 20khz world (AKA synth nerds).

I finally installed the FRA update and it's much nicer.  :-+
It would be better if you could choose a smaller range for the MIN and MAX frequencies though. That's more what Julian was missing.

I decided to build the same circuit as Julian and used the FRA in the old 10 points per decade mode and then with 50 points. The results were better than I expected considering the smallest span I could use was min:100Hz max:10kHz.
It would still be nice to be able to set min and max in 1KhZ steps, at least when you're down in the audio range.

@dentaku, that definitely is an improvement. I'll send the min/max feedback to the team.

Thanks for the screenshots!

In those two screenshots you notice that other than the resolution you cannot tell how many plot points are in each version. It would be very helpful if the number of point were indicated in the graph. This could be tick marks for each point, or at least a numerical readout of the number of points. This was when you print or save the graph you will later know what you are looking at.

Having just made a bunch of plots and saved them to USB I can tell you it would also be useful to be able to label them. So you could have documentation of *what* each plot is plotting.

looks like FRA is a new option for the 3k/4K/6K X-series InfiniiVision

3000T X-series $1100 USD
4000 X-series $1530 USD
6000 X-series $1845 USD
