LeCroy PP092 2Gs/sec adapter
« on: July 26, 2014, 08:46:19 pm »
Good evenin'...

Just came across this LeCroy PP092 adapter suitable for 9354 models...

What benefit would it give when replacing two channels with this adapter?
Would I end up with 3 channels, and one of them with higher bandwidth?

No, you end up with a single channel.

The normal mode of the 'scope is 4 channels @500MHz analogue bandwidth with 500Ms/s sampling, if you put it into "two channel mode" you get two channels (2+3) at 1Gs/s

If you then put the adapter onto channel 2+3 you get a single channel with 2Gs/s, the analogue bandwidth remains 500MHz

Ah okay....

It switches automatically to 1Gs/sec when I switch of Ch1 and Ch4?

So the 2GS/sec labelled on DSO is only achievable with the PP092 adapter, not with 3 channels off....

Saw the PP092 on ebay, one item from Germany around US$ 130, and two PP092 from the US for US$ 99.99, though shipping costs not known yet...
But then again, what would I do with two of those (o;

I have an LC574AL and am waiting for a PP094 to arrive from Israel (are their planes flying yet?) $53AUD and about $10AUD postage on fleabay.
I would keep looking around, I think $100 is a bit steep for a PP092

Simply turning the channels off wont do it. I don't know the menu system for your scope but for mine its in the timebase menu "Channel Use" where you can select 4, 2 or peak detect

it contains an eeprom that sets the scope to gang up all the ADCs into 2 physical channels. It is 50ohm input terminated only.
Inside the adapter is a microstrip delay line and 3way power splitter to produce 2 analog signals, 180 degrees out of phase.
These 2 physical channels are then interleaved digitally for your total of 2gs/sec.

The exact model number of adapter you need depends on your scope. There are several, make sure you get the one that is compatible.

Mine cost $40, but some are easier to find

Just checked the manual mine is supposed to be a PP092 :palm:

I don't think there's a 180o phase shift - just a 50ohm splitter and delay line.

Not so much with three channels off but with all four combined to give the 2Gs/s rate

Hmmm, are you sure? The LC574AL is 1GHz bandwidth 4x1Gs/s which can be combined for 4Gs/s - that would sound llike the PP094 is the one you need.

No I'm not sure. What you are saying makes perfect sense and a text document on Ko4bb's site in the lecroy folder suggest that it is indeed the pp094 for the LC574AL

Looking through all of the documents I have for this scope I can't find where it is I read it. Probably a mix up on my part as a lot of these docs serve a wide range of LC scopes including the 500MHz 374

LeCroy PP092 2Gs/sec, why not 2M samples ?
« Reply #9 on: September 12, 2015, 11:57:01 am »
Hi,

I bought a PP092 adaptor for my LS334AM.
It works well as far as providing 2GS/sec in the appropriate conditions (i.e.: intrinsic rate limited to 0.5ns/point)
But it provides me with the max 2M samples ONLY in the Tdiv=0.1ms selection....
When Tdiv is shorter than 0.1ms it is OK because you cannot sample faster that 0.5ns/pt
But when Tdiv in larger than 0.1ms, the scope falls down to 1M and stays there instead.... (why not staying to 2M??)

Any clue?
Thx much,
Gilles.

I believe with no changes to the delay circuit then I'm getting overlapping samples.
Test this with few hundred MHz signal. If sample timing is not right you certainly will have a distorted waveform.

The EEPROM values are still a mystery to me though so I'm trying to find someone to extract the data from a PP094 so I can compare. I created an Arduino sketch and pictures showing the simple connections to extract the EEPROM.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3DxGohjXqWpRndGWDVoNmx3b1U

I also need to get a picture of the inside of a PP094 so I can see the component values.
I have the pp094. It's early morning here, I'll post some close up photos and see if I can extract the eeprom contents later tonight. One thing I remember is that the tracks to both outputs are symmetrical, unlike the pp092 pp093 pictured above

I do still need the PP094 EEPROM data though.
Here you go. It's a binary file (*.bin) renamed it to *.txt to allow it to be uploaded here.

If you need any more details or close up photos, let me know

Using microstrip (conductor over ground plane)  and stripline (conductor between ground planes) calculators you can see that impedance increases with distance from the ground plane. Given the likelihood that on a pcb the distance between conductor and ground plane will be much smaller than your prototype, you should see a significant drop in line impedance. The task would then be to match impedances between the strip and your terminators
