Oscilloscope Case
« on: December 23, 2013, 09:30:45 pm »
Hello,

I've just got a GWInstek GDS-1102A-U, and I'm looking for a cheap but good quality carry case for it.

I can get their official one for around £85, but this seems too expensive to me!

Does anyone know of any reasonably priced cases which may be suitable? I believe the size is similar to the Rigol units.

Many thanks :)

You mention it's similar to the Rigol units, do you meet the DS2000, DG4000 etc. ?

I bought an OWON MSO case for my Rigol DS2072 ( Any Rigol fan boys out there to accuse me of sacrilege? ).

The case is decent, not amazing quality but good enough. I would have preferred more padding.
There is quite a bit of room in the main compartment, it could have been a bit smaller.
After all my gripes, I am happy I got it. On the whole it does the job and for the price I can't complain.

I got it from aliexpress for $30 inc. shipping.
I see testequipmentdepot.com has it for $10.95, no clue how much shipping costs.

I agree, though that's pretty much par for the course.  They're special purpose, and 'custom-tailored', to some extent.

I do have a helpful recommendation though.  TEquipment has a really excellent quality scope multi-purpose case, normally 80$, on sale for just 25$.  (I doubt shipping is free, but have no idea how much it is.)

As long as your piece of test gear fits in the 13.5" long by 7.5" x 7.5" internal space (343 x 190 x 190mm), it's a super option.  Rugged construction, well padded, lots of extra storage compartments (zippered), with both carry handle and shoulder strap.  AFAICT, these are identical to the one I got for my DS1102CD several years ago (at a considerably higher price), which has stood up to use well.

If I could think of something to put in one (unfortunately a DSA815 won't fit), I'd buy another in a minute.  Heck, I may buy another one anyway, just in case.  No pun intended.  A know a DS1074Z would fit.  Sadly, a DS2000-series would not (it's 3/4" too long).  :(

Unless you have an objection to carrying around an advert for TEquipment (they have their logo tastefully stitched on the top flap), I can't think of any reason not to get one.  Unless your kit never leaves the bench.

[Disclaimer: I have no financial relationship to/with TEquipment.]

I wanted to give this one a look-see, but I couldn't find it on their web site.  Probably because I was using "case" in my search terms.

I think I did finally manage to find the one you were referring to (by pulling up a price list, and scanning for the price you mentioned).

PDSSBAG    Owon PDSSBAG Soft bag For PDS    Buy Now    Sale $10.95  (Reg. $12.00)

Sadly, no pictures or specs, or even size info.   :o  But presumably big enough to hold the scope it's advertised with here.  Urg, no size specs on that either.  Pull up the PDF, and I see it's a 350 x 157 x 103mm scope.  But if Kobus has a DS2072 stuffed in there, it must be considerably larger.  Especially considering his comment that he wished it were "a bit smaller".

I doubt a "soft bag" would be as good a choice as the Rigol case I mentioned above.  But I know some folks here are strapped for cash, but still need a decent case.  If it's adequate, it may be an acceptable option, for a very low price.  As Kobus says, "it's good enough", and that may be good enough for others as well.

Since the website has no pictures, the Owon site has no information, and a Google search turned up nothing, perhaps Kobus could post a few photos, or at least the inside dimensions of the soft bag?  Even if the padding isn't great, sometimes having any case (sorry, a bag) is better than none at all.

[Oh, and I have no financial relationship to/with Owon either.  May as well get them all out of the way at once... I have no such relationships with any consumer test equipment companies.  Darn it.  :'( ]

Thanks, looks like a great case, but they want $60 for shipping to me.

I'll have a look at your other suggestions.

I didn't manage to measure the bag but the scope it's designed for, the Owon MSO,
is 370 mm × 180 mm × 120 mm (14.57" × 7.09" × 4.72").

Here are some shots showing the case with my Rigol DS2072

Thanks for the photos.  As you said, it does look decent.  Soft lining, but thin on padding.  As for size, that would also fit a DSA815, so I may look into that.

[EDIT: Ground shipping on the $11 Owon bag is minimum of $8.33, here in the US.  Maybe it's heavier than it looks.  :) ]

Our bag is great.  Hands down this bag is a great scope case.  It fits the DSA815 with the padded inserts out.

25 is below our cost on these.  Scopes got bigger and these took 9 months to come in from China so we have some left.

Thanks!

Oh, I agree.  I do too.  That's why I described it as a "really excellent case" when I introduced it above.  It's amazingly functional, with very high build quality.

I wasn't aware of that.  Thanks for the info.  That opens up some new possibilities.

IMO, the size of this case is it's only limitation.  Plus the fact that it normally sells for 4-6 times as much.  (I've seen the same case a couple years ago, selling for ~$150, from a different seller.)  At it's current sale price it's a no-brainer.  Anyone who eventually gets a hands-on look at one of these later, will kick themselves for not buying it now, at these prices.

The one I have for my DS1102CD still looks like new, though I've taken it everywhere in the last 4 years.  And it's done a fine job protecting my scope, and keeping all my accessories organized.

my big mistake was when I got these a while ago they took 1 year to come in from China after the design was done.  By then the new wave of scopes came out with bigger screens.  I need a unit for the bigger units.  This is good for the smaller dso units.
