That was an attempt at self-suggestion that failed miserably...

?

Performa01 has documented the capture rates of the 824 model in detail. The maximum of nearly 120k wfm/s is obtained at 50 ns/div time scale, 1000 pts/capture, and of course with the display in dot mode.

Now that my 814X HD has arrived, I tested the capture rate of the unmodified scope. And presto -- it reaches the very same 118.6k wfm/s! So Siglent is simply underselling the 814 (and presumably the 804) in the datasheet, maybe to create an additional differentiation for the top-of-the-range model?

Anyway, it seems that an "improved" 804 or 814 model will reach the same performance as the 824 in every respect.

I promised to repeat this with my 804 (now 824):
Max capture rate vector mode 31.6 k, dot mode 120.1 k
(If it walks like a duck …)

  • The included probes are so-so. I bought the 814 to give the 100 MHz probes away together with my old DS1000Z, and they are ok for that. But otherwise, if you are intending to hack the scope anyway, start with the 804 model and get some third-party probes for the money saved. E.g. the Testec passive probes are much nicer than Siglent's, for a comparable price: Separate LF and HF compensation capacitors; hook made from spring steel rather than stamped sheet metal; BNC adapter included; spare tip included; crocodile clip of the ground strap much easier to press since the isolation is not stupidly stiff.
I followed your advice and ordered 2 passive Testec MF-312 probes. They look promising!

@ Bad driver: meaning you "improved" it? or did you return your scope and buy a bigger one? What rate dig you get with your 804 (or when it was still an 804)?

Another question I wanted to ask: were there good Black Friday offers for Siglent last year or just for Rigol?

Can't speak for the USA or Asia, but in Europe there was nothing for BF from Siglent.

After 3 months of intensive testing, I sold it again.
I still think it's good, but no longer for the money, as something clearly better has come onto the market.
I was actually tempted to buy an 804 because I like to experience things for myself.
Otherwise I can borrow scopes from work, but I don't have an "emergency" at home at the moment.

We usually get 15% off from stuff that you would never buy for black friday. Like from the 500 EUR Phillips slow cooker.

Oh what the heck, I've bought one now, you can get rid of it quite easily if.
Be prepared to be impressed to what has been crammed into these little DSO's.  :)
Any suggestions what to test thats missing from a MSOX3104, what I used at my different jobs for the past 14 years or so?

I checked only the bandwidth during the „improvement“ process, not the capture rate.
The label on the top and the invoice say, it‘s a 804, the system info says now 824  ^-^

Welectron actually has the 804X HD in stock, as I received an email confirming shipment this afternoon.
As I never have luck with DHL on Saturdays, I assume it will arrive on Monday. ;)
The SDS1104X-E is already back here.

Hi egonotto,
I´ll have fun with it..
When the SDS3034X HD arrives, the 804X HD will probably sold again, I wouldn't know what else to do with it.
Until then, I will take measurements and present them here, different situations, sometimes with and sometimes without the demo board.
Noise test with microphone too, bandwidth measurements, staggered according to original, 100Mhz, 200Mhz.
Then see if the upgrade to the 824 really means 100Mpts memory, stuff like that.
I like to try out scopes myself instead of watching videos or reading threads and the price makes it easy to realize this.
I have no doubt that I'll get rid of it quickly when the time comes.

My reseller says it takes more than a month before the *licence* for the LA probe is in stock. How can that be?

Everything is possible at Siglent.eu... :-X
No, fun. ;)
If it's only about the license key, that can't be right, it's never "in stock" because it's virtual.
Normally you buy the key, give the serial number of the scope and then it can only be a matter of days after the purchase until you receive the appropriate key by email.

A beautiful mistake.... ;)
I don't know what deal welectron has with DHL, but the delivery time from warehouse to home is rarely over 36h.... madness. :scared:
Actually 70Mhz probes included, actually clever.
A set of new probes costs more than buying the larger model.
Unless, like me, you have others at home anyway, then the idea behind it has become obsolete.
So, let the scope acclimatize first.... 8)

How does it work....
That's nothing more than operating a key generator, or do they work it out at Siglent with a slide rule....
