Good idea.

Then pull this out of your briefcase, and use it to demolish arguments made by innumerate people. (Probably doesn't matter whether or not you get the correct answer :) )

Look what I've found at my late father in law's shop:

The guts:

and it can even stand up on its feet  :D

Poor accuracy in DC but quite precise in AC. That's what I call a vintage voltmeter!

Looks like a Pifco (UK) meter. I have several of these. Here's an "All-in-one" version from my collection in relatively good condition.

Awwww yissss.

More tasty TM500 modules!  ;D
PG506, TM501, SG504, SG503, an almost complete scope calibration suite.  8)

I'll compare with my collection, restore and keep the best, sell the rest.

I told my wife how much I wanted to bid (she gets grumpy if I don't use the credit card for the points) and mentioned that using these modules I can calibrate/adjust my 'to sell' gear and hence sell it for more.

When I won, she actually said 'good!'  :o I do love her.  :-DD

Brandnew and unused Lindström 9857 set on the way to me.
I've paid EUR 50.- + shipping for it.

I think they'd have to invent negative CAT numbers for that...

If you look closely there's a logo with an "N". Maybe a Pifco knockoff?  ::)
[EDIT] Nope! it's a Neuberger, Munich, circa '30s or early '40s. See below.

I've seen one identical in an online auction site here in Spain for 25€ (here). I wonder whether the 6V scale is for car batteries of the same vintage...

I actually mustered up enough courage to measure mains voltage (230VAC here) with the meter in my picture, but with the necessary additional precautions of course. It didn't blow up! but a lot of blind trust was involved. The cool thing with those meters is that the 4 legs and the loop on the top are isolated from the case and are the connection points for the test leads.

McBryce.

Edit: Most likely a knock-off, the point where the cable enters the top is actually a 2mm banana plug socket on Pifco meters. Or maybe just a user bodge?
Although, the Pifco meters also had that tin plate to hid the guage mechanism on all devices too.

Not sure it's a "knock-off", found this image, with the search string "old voltmeter images".

I'm trying to work out the manufacturer.

EDIT: I believe the manufacturer may be Neuberger.

I can take some pictures tomorrow of the inside of a Pifco for comparison if that helps?

Pre WWII vehicle dynamo lighting/starting systems in the UK were 6V, 8V or 12V, the meters I have are scaled up to 20V, too late to add a picture tonight.

Oh boy, I just couldn't help my self once again.... I am so weak I should seek therapy.

Just back from work, At 17h45min I saw this for sale, posted at 17h42....  3 minutes earlier... there was a "Buy" button available so of course I clicked on it.

https://www.leboncoin.fr/outillage_materiaux_2nd_oeuvre/2346532413.htm

A nice Metrix MX54 for 60 Euros in good nick if slightly dirty, complete with the rubber baby buggy bumper which is a huge plus... the meter is not really practical to use without it (the tilting bale is part of the bumper).

I have way too many of these meters but way too few bumpers to go with them  ! You can't really find separately, so a meter that comes with it is worth a premium.

In this case it's way below market price so even without the bumper I would still have bought it....

Help needed, is there anyone in the Oxford area of the UK who could collect a calculator from a person and post it on to me? I'd paypal them all the costs and something extra if they could do that for me?

The seller will not send it without doing a bank transfer which has zero protection, I've been caught like that before.

Thanks

Oh, something out of the ordinary just popped up here.

https://www.leboncoin.fr/cd_musique/2347368439.htm

A Neek-c clock. I mean, an actual one from back in the day.

Looks like a commercial kit unit to me. Cabinet wood work looks home made.
I don't know who is the manufacturer of this one. In the bottom left it says " PB DU1 ".

Maybe "PB" is the manufacturer and " DU1 " the model number...

Not for me and way too expensive, but if someone wants it I can be the middle man.

The push-button labeling in the lower right corner is a little odd.

The stern "NO TOUCH" warning would be self-defeating as most most people would then be tempted touch the buttons just like they never trust a "WET PAINT" sign and always touch the painted surface to check.

Yeah I found that weird too ! If you don't them why use such big buttons as well... you would want them to be as small and discrete as possible to not attract attention. Better put them on the rear panel I guess, but looks like they didn't have much real estate left at all back there, granted.... so to the front they went. At least they could have made these button much smaller and maybe covered by a plate so they can't be acted upon accidentally.

But it's a kit for sure, so they had to make something functional and affordable before anything else...
