Spent part of the afternoon working with the 501A.  When I tried to calibrate the scope to the curver tracer, it was pretty clear that step voltage generation wasn't linear. I measured my way through each of the steps (0.05V to 1.00V) and step sizes varied by as little as five and by as much as eighteen percent; the specification is +/- three percent.  Sidenote: I really do appreciate the voltage and time measurement tools built into the 2465.

The manual includes a calibration procedure that involved soldering jumpers on the PC board, before adjusting two carbon comp trimmer pots. I was not hopeful but my pessimism was unfounded. Did the calibration and got step variation to less than two percent from 0.05V to 1.00V.

Now working my way through the rest of the manual and re-training myself in semiconductor device characterization.  Useful? Probably not. Fun? Definitely.

The bad news... I can not longer deny the reality of appreciable noise appearing on the 2465 display and I am going to have to deal with it sooner rather than later.

What is this? Throw back Thursday? Speaking of old station wagons. And GreyWoolfe mentioned Chevy Celebrity Station Wagon. Well, here was mine. 1986 "Eurosport" option although it was no where near a European inspired vehicle. 2.8 V-6 with a new feature called "Port Fuel Injection". Of course automatic transmission which true to GM form shit the bed at about 80K miles and cost a fortune to fix. The one nice thing it had with the Eurosport option was a free flow exhaust so the V-6 had a nice bark to it.

Ours was the same color.  Too funny.  It never had the opportunity for the trans to shit the bed.  The wagon was 5 years old when we split, she got to keep it as I had my own car and picklehead rear ended her hard enough to total it.

Not well, I fear. FX8350 is in top 1/2 of the class as a gaming rig, but just barely holding on by its toenails thanks to the RX580 I stole when the bottom fell out of GPU cryptomining. Already low and sinking fast as a workstation due to cheap 16-32GB/Ryzen 2xxx builds flooding the marketplace. Look how far my old 1055T/FX8350 build, once upon a time a literal Gaming Death Star, has sunk in just the last couple weeks as Ryzen 3xxx builds hit the charts. This is the SAME BUILD, SAME RUN. The only thing that has changed is the raw data in the last 2 weeks. 

And worse, I only managed to pull those numbers out of my arse 2 weeks ago by OCing the FX8350 and the RX580; first runs were in the 30s across the board. It is no longer the "Silent Death" nightstalking wardragon it used to be; now more like a toothless old wyrm in a shiny parade uniform that howls like a banshee whenever you put it to work. 

Eh... it served me well and faithfully for a decade. I can't even say that about the car I'm driving.

To offset that preponderance, I offer a much more sexy vehicle (look at those curves!) with far more scope for TEA related fettling...

The Merc G-Series I have no problem with; they're known round the world as a dependable, go-anywhere utility vehicle (Not SUV) that long ago took over Range Rover's place in the REAL WORLD. That AMG Brabutt 6x6, OTOH, just proves that you still CAN make something stupider than a Hummer. What boggles my poor little reptilian brain is that all 3 are built in whole or part by AMG.



But I still haven't seen anything that tops the International CX4 as "most wasteful mass-produced personal conveyance".  YET.

Not afraid of the recap as much as I am reluctant to take the 2465 out of service to do the recap, knowing I will get distracted by some other shiny bobble nearby, which I will start working on, only to be halted when I realize I need the oscope to work on said shiny bobble.      

But yeah I gotta do it, and thanks for the encouragement and thread pointer.
