I was thinking of just going with this paper printout for the new dial markings. You think it's good enough guys?

(Attachment Link)

Clearly you need a Laser Cutter and a paintbrush to fill the engraving lines  >:D

Rubbish! A lathe to make a new dial, a milling machine and a spindexer to engrave the dial and then a paintbrush to fill the markings in. And obviously the test gear necessary to the process, an engineers square, vernier calipers, edge finder, micrometer and a couple of dial test indicators. >:D

I was only floating an 'affordable and simple' solution  :-DD

I think he should etch new marks in the plastic by scribing with a toothpick dipped in alkaline battery juice. And then neutralize the etching action with a squirt of Windex followed by a water rinse.  >:D

Is that the Type 585 you mentioned at last week's Discord session?

Yeah it’s a Type 585A and he has the original manuals, the plugin adapter, and a number of vertical plugins.

But  TDS5054B-NV is a navy-version without touch.... :--    Luck, i have access to  10.4  TTL-RGB-Panel with  touch & VGA-Resolution.  I'll  connect touch with  chinese  5 wire   USB-touch-controller (Fancyview  resistiv touch controller)   Touch controller is shipped, i get probably next week.  (german supplier)

Unless the transparent shield has changed to reduce the contrast of whatever is behind it, personally I'd print on plastic (laser or inkjet) and put that behind the shield. The plastic is likely to be stiffer over time than the paper, so could be glued in the centre alone rather than across the whole diameter.

I have used paper where contrast was limited and the back of the paper could be glued to the frame.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

One drop of H[SbF6] should suffice to
- neutralize the KOH
- etch new markings

So then we had the "It's not safe to use my stuff without asking" talk with him for the umpteenth time, and he actually surprised me:

"I'm sorry for annoying you." he apologized.

"That's not what you should be sorry for." I answered. He grew genuinely thoughtful for a moment, then replied:

"I'm sorry for using your stuff without asking."

"Good... good. You've just taken your first step into a larger world." I answer, cracking a slight grin. He started laughing.

I had step children that never learned this, no matter how many times the subject came up.  |O |O :palm:

No one touches stuff in my office, no one likes to come in here and they don't know what any of it is, so it's all left alone.  Once I started locking the tool chest, even Mrs GreyWoolfe stopped trying to borrow tools for God knows what when I wasn't around.  Because the garage is TOO far away and the 61" tool chest is too intimidating to dig into. ;D  I think I will label the drawers to make it easier for her not to mention my senior moments when I can't remember where something is and have to look in multiple drawers. :palm:

tsssssssssssssssss...

Watched this without the sound on, as listening to dumbasses annoys me. What acid is he claiming to have used? A single drop of hydrofluoric acid would have eaten straight through the screen, the pcb, the battery, and if the battery didn't explode, then the back of the phone and the glass bowl...

From what I've seen, a small amount of water is enough to kill an iPhone, I'm therefore guessing he simply transferred the guts from a working phone after he "distressed" the case.

My iPhone XR is waterproof. I regularly soak it.  Has had rain and snow all over it and has been in the sink a couple of times.

It’s not hydroflouric acid proof though.

fluoroantimonic acid is a liquid, at least according to Sigma Aldritch.

Handling this requires a certain amount of protective gear.

Indeed, and not just rubber gloves. It wants to be done in a fume cabinet at the least.

None of that negates the fact that my procedure does, in fact, neutralize the electrolyte’s attack on the device in question, and that it does so better than water and a toothbrush alone.

I don’t care WHY or HOW it works. I only care THAT it works, and that I have the materials on hand to NEUTRALIZE the damage.

Empirical evidence is valid too; there’s a lot more than just alkali in alkaline battery chemistry, just as there’s a lot more than just ammonia and water in Windex.

That’s not a straw man; that's just using what works. Maybe you should try it; maybe you can tell me why.

It's a strawman argument because you're arguing against something I didn't say but something you've set up and then knocked down.

Did I say that it didn't work [to get the whole thing clean] - no. Yet you are insisting that is the argument. That is the classic strawman.

If you use the words 'neutralize' and 'alkali' in the same sentence any reasonable observer is going to conclude that you're using the particular meaning of 'neutralize' that pertains to alkalis. (Go on, google "neutralize alkali" and see what you get.) Same as if you're using 'walk' and 'dog' in the same sentence. If you're going to retrospectively claim that "I'm going to walk the dog" used the meaning of walk that is "move an object by rocking one edge from corner to corner repeatedly" then you're going to get shot down in flames. The same applies if you're going to implicitly retrospectively claim that you used 'neutralize' in some other sense than the one pertaining to alkalis and then go huffing and puffing "I know better because it works" when someone points out that alkalis don't neutralize alkalis, only acids do, then you're gonna look childishly intransigent.

Indeed, and not just rubber gloves. It wants to be done in a fume cabinet at the least.

Somebody else's gloves, on somebody else's hands, in somebody else's fume hood, in somebody else's neighbourhood. (You want to be able to get home once all the barriers and guys in hazmat suits turn up.)

The fuckwitt in that video is lucky to be alive. If you'd listened to it with the sound up you'd garner that he hasn't the first bit of clue about what he's doing.

fluoroantimonic acid is a liquid, at least according to Sigma Aldritch.

The CAS number on the bottle is 16950-06-4, which is right for fluoroantimonic acid. I can't find a melting point for fluoroantimonic acid, so it's quite possible that sample is frozen. The label is from Strem Chemicals 7 Mulliken Way Newburyport WA 01950, which isn't exactly Sigma, but seems legit.

No, I'm just tired of picking this particular nit with you, old friend. This isn't the first time, it probably won't be the last.  ;)

I said MIGHT. I never said you DID make those arguments. Yet somehow, I DID know you'd come along and bust my balls, nonetheless...  :-DD

I've deferred to your superior knowledge of chemistry many times before, I don't deny it now. But THIS PROCESS WORKS. I've tried it, and compared it to the same process with plain water just to make sure it wasn't all in my head. While there are LOTS of thing that ARE just in my head (trust me you don't wanna look too deep in there; it's full of scary things and it smells funny :o); this is one thing which I've proven to my own satisfaction WORKS.

And at this point in my life, that's all I need to know. :-//
