OK, the verdict is in. This 310 Fan is TOO FUCKING LOUD.  It's even worse than the HP counter fans. 

Follow on project. There's plenty of room for a transformer and simple DC supply. It's gonna get a much quieter DC fan.

Telekom technician was zippadoodling at that DSL box on the street.
Was supposed to call and then come and install in house.
Which of course he did not.
Telekom appointment app told me: hey, installation has been completed.
Plugged in Fritzbox, internet worked for a minute, then popped up a warning that they cut it off again. Downstream better than advertised at 63 instead of 50 Mbit/s, upstream at 12 (which is nothing to be sniffed at ...)
Spent 30 minutes on the phone with the Vodafone hotline to no avail, but got the number from their installation support team.
spent another 30 minutes, reset the fritzbox to factory defaults, and lo and behold, now I am working from somewhere near Schlicktown.

Will try looting Reichelt tomorrow. Anyone with any exquisite needs that I may fulfill ? They had a GWInstek MFG sitting there, I did not enquire as to the price.

The 310 Fan Mount is put back together and tested. Since this unit in no way meets the latest UL and CSA standards I took great pains to check over the harness for overall condition, made sure there was no accidental reversal of hot and neutral, and made absolutely sure of ground integrity. So while it looks ancient 1950's it's safe.

The pilot lamp is an old school 3/4 inch mount. Damn near impossible to replace. Most pilot lamp mounts today are 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch mount. So I put it together for now without the pilot lamp. I'm going to cut it apart and use the 3/4 mount bezel and bodge something together.

I still have to make up the cable between this unit and the scope. The original was dry rotted and unusable. I don't have the parts. Will visit local home center today.

This fan pulls the air through the scope and then exhausts it through the front. Nice. Hot air right in your face. 

   

They designed just for you Med, to keep you warm in the winter when you sit in front of it using it for hour after hour 

med, you're using it wrong. You're supposed to put it UNDER the bench, pointed at your feet.    Then you won't mind the noize, either. 

Is that indicator light for a 3/4" hole, or 5/8" hole with a 3/4" bezel?

These are the latter; worst case if it won't fit as-is, you should be able to epoxy the bulb-holder to your existing jewel/bezel. If you scroll down the search they're available in white/clear jewel, green, amber and blue as well.

I was busy scraping off some paint cleaning a scope  last night, that Tek blue stuff makes your skin dry...

My 2230 had been in storage in a damp and dusty bird squat for almost two years so it was partly covered in grime, grunge and possibly grool (bird squat remember, pigeons mainly so I'm not sure that applies here...)

The plan was to clean it and sell, the scope herd needs thinning a little need cash for a S.A. one day.

It was working fine before storage, now it's clean again I have a focus/brightness interaction problem.
Most noticeable is having low brightness on readout and high on trace, only one of either can be focused correctly.
I hope this isn't a saggy H.V. multiplier.

Ended up buying yet another power supply, not like I haven't got enough already.

Spotted a TTI PL330QMD on eBay and made an offer, was listed as fully working but had missing knobs and some damaged terminal posts.
Ordered a set of later knobs from TTI along with a complete set of terminal posts, changed it all over and got it looking much nicer.
Put it up on the shelf and thought I'd use it, then realised the ammeters were not reading anything and the constant current mode wasn't working 

I stripped it down and wrongly assumed it was something to do with the Quad mode section as it was the same on both sides, turns out it had exactly the same fault on both control boards.
Replaced 3 capacitors on both boards and found a few skeleton type VR's open circuit, I've cleaned those up and set it up briefly and it all seems to be working okay.
One of the corners had started de-laminating, quite a common issue with these as the metal frame on the bottom of the front is slightly curved at the bottom and the laminations get knocked when the PSU is moved, I tried some windscreen repair liquid initially but wasn't happy with the results, then I spotted a touch up pen for my other halves car (Mercedes Calcite White) so I turned the PSU upside down and dropped a bit in where it had delaminated, taped it down with some masking tape and let it dry. Not a bad match at all!

The displays look cloudy in the photo's, they are not. I had to slow the camera shutter speed down due to the digits being multiplexed as they would not show fully.

I've ordered the replacement VR's (not open skeleton!) and will give it a calibration when they arrive. 
Always liked the PL series of PSU's, apart from the MK1. And been looking for a QMD for a while.

I seem to have a thing for TTI/Thurlby Thandar, my collection seems to be growing.

The fan isn't anywhere near the tubes and it doesn't get THAT hot.

Thats a very good point, I thought you said before Med that was designed to force cool air into the scope from the bottom, not exhaust air from the scope. It would actually work more efficiently that way round I would have thought?

Yeah, and there was a filter in front of the fan before, so it's supposed to pull, not push. Hmmmmm...   

med, when you took the fan apart to clean it, you probably put the bearing/laminate/bearing sandwich back together wrong; this makes these little induction motors run backwards. Take it apart again and flip the laminate core over and reassemble it. Then the fan will pull again like it's supposed to. And it'll probably be a lot quieter, as the fan blades are usually designed to work most efficiently in one direction. And of course, reinstalling the filter will also make things quieter as well.



EDIT: Yup... scrolling back and looking at this pic, going by the shape of the blades this fan is definitely meant to pull, not push. Flipping the laminate core over will make it run the right way.

Are you sure the blades are not on backwards or the stator hasn't been reversed?
It's nonsensical to suck hot air down, much better to aid convection by blowing up and aid convection raher than fighting it.
I've come across  couple of cases where the stator stack and coil had been inadvertently reversed on this type of shaded pole motor reversing the direction.

EDIT Doh, didnot fully catch up looks like you realised the stator was reversed.

I'm confused. Burned a UBCD and tested it on my main computer. Works like a charm. Tried it on the Wavepro, it just ignores it. I just don't get it. It doesn't even look at the USB or CD boot drives I give it.

F4 or F10 at startup. Probably disabled external boot.

@med6753 Looking at the original fan motor and the cleaned and lubed motor photos, it has been assembled with the stator block round the wrong way, flip round so the tail come out at the front and then double them back to meet the loom as you can see in the original photo is how it was. IT will then improve the cooling significantly and hopefully reduce the noise level as well.

Have you tried with a CD drive straight to the mainboard skipng the USB adapter? (Of course it makes things a whole lot less convenient....)
