Firstly, that is only a drawing, not an actual photo, the car itself is a Wolsey 1500 and as you will see from the these 2 photos, is a small car and that the engine layout is totally different, the battery for instance on those cars sat on the engine bulkhead at the back of the bay. I have had a car since the 60s with Lucas electrics and have never experienced anything like the horror stories some of you relate. Also, I have never had the starting problems that some of you have mentioned, just kept the car well maintained, but I suspect that a lot of the issues arose from the bonnet (hood for you yanks) was unlined and so when the temperature dropped, would cause the condensation to drip all over the engine and ignition leads.

There are lawn mowers over here with bigger engines than that.

Asking because  7xxx's come up on UK eBay sometimes.  I always asume it doesn't work and needs at least the power supply caps replaced.  I have no idea what I'd be getting into.    I have repared a few 545's  and 555's and a 315  but that is entirely different.

Yep, we have them over here as well, they are sit on ones that resemble a tractor with the mower blades beneath them.

Not wanting to change subjects but if you actually PAY your taxes at a reasonable level then you have an expectation of better services and safety nets/healthcare for all. Reducing taxes/duties and charges effects the bottom end of earners always

I paid £46,000 in income tax and NI last year approximately and VAT on what was left over from that.

I tweaked my current meager 'earnings' and Pension income to pay nothing in Tax last year. Still paid some bit via the GST and other but my recent MRI was $0 and with refunds from the government all my hearing work was under $200 for 4 professional visits. Apart from the top end of town dodging their bit we do ok as a country for Tax to Benefits.

Back when I had a real job and our marginal rates were higher I paid more in Tax than I earned last year

Zero import duty.    It would be subject to 20% VAT.   VAT and duty are different things.      The seller or eBay should  collect VAT on the final price, including shipping.   


 It also would need the correct paperwork.  If the seller is a private individual, they may have no idea about the required documents.

That is either a REALLY tiny engine, or a friggin' HUGE battery!!  Is it  an early attempt at an EV?

@Pat You have had the luxury of rarely having to deal with Lucas electrics in cars - 'Mr Lucas - the prince of darkness - who accidentally invented the intermittent windscreen wiper etc. To get a 1960s Lucas containing car started in winter you will need a bigger battery than that! HiHi

It might be a Wolsey, but I doubt the artist used that exact 1500 model to make his drawing from. The front section between the radiator and front grill is deeper and a completely design on the drawing too (the bit the guy is leaning on). So it probably a slightly different Wolsey model.

Edit: Some quick research would suggest that it's a Wolsey 16-60 and the engine to battery size ratio isn't all that far off from reality.

That doesn't seem right.  I'm now beginning to understand how Brexit came to pass. You guys are fucked. 

Brexit has made a complete mess of trade with the EU.      Debbie ordered a pair of boots from Ireland, about 60 miles from here.  They took a week to arrive, having spent 5 days in customs.    They didn't fit, so she sent them back for a refund.  We needed to print out and include 3 copies of the orginal invoice and three copies of the return form.  The return took ten days.  Before brexit it would have taken two.


I orderd a spool of solder from RS UK.  They shipped from Germany.  Took 10 day to arrive and came with 10 pages of forms.


The Brexit agreement has destablised Northern Ireland.     The DUP has had three leaders in the  past 60 days.       I  don't know what is going to happen but I'm worried.

As for import I’m using Amazon to do that for me. They seem to be handling the whole situation quite well so far or at least hiding enough of it away from me so I don’t see it.

Ordered a ream of paper the other day and it was delivered from Germany next day via airmail on Amazon prime

My Morris Minor discovered four modes on the floor dipper swtch.
(1)Low beam.
(2)High beam
(3)Pitch darkness
(4)Both high & low beams simulaneously.

Driving on High beam, another car approaches, ----I try to dip the lights.
Suddenly, up comes (4), lighting up the place like a floodlight.

Frantically, I hit the switch again, up comes (3) ---pitch darkness.

I grovel over to where I can just see the edge of the road from the other car's lights.

He sweeps past, blasting me with his horn.

I sit there, recovering my composure, & try all the positions again, finally getting back to (1).

Nope, I concur with VK6ZGO it's a 60s Wolseley 15/60.
I came to the same conclusion independently before I read his post. That makes it a B series engine rather than an A. The Ladybird technical illustrations may have been drawings but I've always found them to be highly detailed and accurate.

My Father did an excellent job when the kit was originally built. It's me that sort of made a mess of things over the years replacing parts. So this rebuild is an atonement for my past sins.  Besides, I needed a project and a diversion from the Type 547 which continues to mock me on a daily basis.
