Bad ebay seller stealing our archive? (Flir upgrade)
« on: July 05, 2017, 05:06:50 pm »
So I'm just look around ebay to see thermal cameras, and I found these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FLIR-E30-E40-E50-Camera-UPGRADE-TO-E60-REMOTE-SERVICE-320x240-Resolution-Menu-/222433284388?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FLIR-E4-to-E8-Camera-UPGRADE-SERVICE-320-x-240-Resolution-MSX-Menu-remotely-/172661511390?
It charges $200 for a "service" which is free on our forum.  :horse:

Edit: Fine, I just know there's many of these, the above link just little examples, just 2 of them.  :palm:

Flir should be quick to send a cease and desist letter. Although saying that, if they've got a secret to cracking the newer firmware - worth the money!

I don't think so, all of them need the buyer to tell them the firmware version "to check if upgradable"

Well, he says:
Please, note that cameras with MSX are only partially upgradable. For more info please contact us.
so no new unkown hack - probably just whats in the forum.
17 sold! so he made 3400 bucks until now. Yeah, lets hope Flirs laywers will send him a nice letter including a massive note of laywer fees.

I don't think they can order him to stop selling the service, any more than they can order EEVBlog to stop discussing the hack. There's no law that says it's illegal to upgrade your hardware, even if it does upgrade cheaper hardware into more expensive hardware, at a tiny fraction of the cost of purchasing the more expensive hardware to start with. People do that with computers all the time (upgrading the hardware by buying parts, rather than buying a more expensive computer off the shelf). And there's nothing wrong with selling a service to do something that many people might not feel they themselves are capable of (due to worrying they accidentally breaking it if they tried it themselves). Yes, there's tutorials online on how to upgrade the RAM in your PC, but there's also computer stores where you can take your computer who will upgrade your RAM for you (and provide other similar services) for a price (Best Buy has Geek Squad for example). EEVBlog does not have exclusive rights to the know-how for upgrading E4 to E8. Just because people here are the first to discover it, does not mean that it's illegal for others to sell the act of doing the upgrade as a service.

Run it by your lawyers, but I suspect it's just a case of stupid people will be parted with their money and you can't stop them. They're not actually selling your software, they're selling their time as an assistent.

Here's an interesting idea...set up your own ebay listing with for $1 for instructions on how to upgrade their FLIR. Make sure you use titles that'll compete with the scammers in searches. Emphasize the software and upgrade are already free and all you're selling is a copy of the manufacturers website instructions. You probably won't make many sales, but you may save them a lot of money!

Once again, run that by your lawyers and your marketing dept.

Great idea indeed, it's the best way to fight them so far.
