I just finished building a PiDP-10 (https://obsolescence.wixsite.com/obsolescence/pidp10) and must say I absolutely adore this thing.  It's even cooler in person!  It now sits on a shelf here and runs TOPS-20.  Makes me really want the PiDP-11 as well since the pdp-11 is what I really learned to program on (in assembly).

Just running a default power-on LED test pattern here.

125 LEDs, 74 key switches... to carefully align and solder.  But it worked out great!

I've never had anything to do with the DEC mainframe, but I toyed with 6502 machine code (hand assembled) over the 80/81 summer holidays between high school and university, then learned asm properly (as a side quest, not part of the course work, we were just supposed to be learning Pascal) on a PDP 11/34 in first year university in 1981. And wrote a PDP-11 simulator on the 6502 back at my parents' house in one holidays ... the sim wasn't large, and the PDP11 code was SO MUCH more powerful and compact than 6502, though of course rather slow to emulate -- really painful to parse out those 3 bit fields, especially the ones that spanned bytes.
