It seems to me that we are seriously being let down by the actions of those at the top of society (in financial terms at least).

This is not a new phenomenon for instance Richard Gibbs became the 'richest commoner in England'  in mid Victorian times.
He did this legally, following the 1807 and 1833 abolition of slavery Acts.

But he still made his fortune off the backs of other less fortunate folks (mainly Chinese) he 'indentured', paying them a pittance in comparison to his own financial rewards.

In effect a form of diluted slavery.

How is stealing the hard work of many other folks today really any different ?

It's mostly because government and politics trends towards less ethics, less honor and less laws that apply to the system.
That leads to smarter/wiser people choosing to stay away from it altogether.
Which leaves an abnormally large pool of stupid/corruptible/manipulative people to run the country.

Greek letter 'Psi' (not Pounds per Square Inch)

I think everyone is afraid of "missing" the AI boom, and so they are letting AI companies get away with whatever they like.
In the next decade or so (if artificial superintelligence doesn't kill us all, if that is actually possible) then I think there will be a big reckoning here.  But right now it's shovels and gold rushes.
