So where can I get some SOLDER-wick?

(Attachment Link)

Well, there you go. What better proof of our pronunciation than that trade name ("SODER-WICK")?

Wait, isn't that where Thomas the Tank Engine lives?

Oh, FFS, not another one. This has been done to death in many threads over the years. I suggest you visit the outside world rather than harping on about your US centric view (you clearly haven't, judging from your posts on power outlets, switch orientations etc.) . Maybe you can message Trump and get him to decree the 'great standard American Sodder' spelling (rather apt), it's great!, it's the greatest! the greatest in history!

Solder is pronounced as it is is spelled:  S o l d e r. Just as with  A l u m i n i u m  and  N u c l e a r.  Just because some US solder wick [Edit: actually 'desoldering braid] manufacturer has used slang in its product name proves nothing.

Now, can we please stop cluttering the forum with these utterly pointless bored OP threads and discuss technical things! >:(

To us it's "sodder".

So, it's similar to the French souder. Noted.

Hi,

Here in the Netherlands, we use “Soldeer” for the material and “Solderen” for the process.
A picture of a part of my Solder collection.

Here in the Netherlands—and I live in Amsterdam—if you go 25 km north, for example to Volendam or Edam, people in those small towns speak a dialect that I can’t understand.
200 km to the east toward Germany or, for example, and to Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, they officially have their own language, so it’s not a dialect!

Here in the Netherlands, it's common for people to speak "ABN" when they meet someone who lives in a dialect-speaking or langguage region.
ABN stands for “Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands” (Standard Dutch).
So that both sides can communicate clearly with each other.

So, in my opinion, at least those who communicate Internationally, say all streaming media and writing pers should use Solder to be as clear as possible.  ;)

My 2 cents

Kind regards,
Bram

No, I'm complaining about someone from my country who insists that his pronunciation of solder is "correct" (it's in that video somewhere) when actually it's not, given that all his fellow countrymen, including me, pronounce it with a silent "L".

You over there can pronounce it any way you like, and that's fine by me.

In other words you're asserting that people from your own country are not allowed to have an opinion differing from your own.

As a general statement, that is true. However, in the specific case of English, it is actually British English that drifted far more.

But of course, English being from the English, English is English and American should learn where its place is. ;)

The idea is attributed to several: appears in Oscar Wilde’s 1887 short story The Canterville Ghost, where the narrator remarks:

“We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language”

Or as is (likely incorrectly) attributed to Wilde, the saying that we are "two nations divided by a common language." :)

I just assume that when someone pronounces it soLder, he's a degenerate
from down under, and been sodded a few times.

Yeah, so what? It's spelt that way, not pronounced (here) that way.

Can't people here fucking read? Apparently not.

Not here it isn't. That's the whole goddamned point.

And it's "aluminum" here.

"Nuclear" is what we say too, unless we're George W. Bush who says "nucular".

You're obviously trying to impose your usage on everyone else, which ironically is what I'm being accused of here. (I do not wish to impose our usage on any other societies: that's not my point at all.)

Also attributed to George Bernard Shaw, an equally iffy provenance.

Hell, maybe Yogi Berra originated that saying.

But you are asserting your intention to impose such a usage on your own society members isnt it?
That is what started the whole thread...

Which is just as bad, if not worse...  :-//
So what if a fellow American pronounces it "solder" and not "sodder"..
I think it would make more sense if you took up the issue with him directly and not vent here..
If that is not possible, then make your peace with it..  ;)
If god made us in his image,
and we are this stupid
then....

"bat - kree" is to solder here in Thailand.
"ta - kua - bat - kree" is solder wire.
"hua-raeng" is soldering iron.

Phonetically of course.

But he is pronouncing it correctly for his audience. Unless you think, and he knows, that only locals are going to view that channel.

No. It's not a matter of me imposing anything on anybody.
The fact of the matter is that all of us here in the U.S. (for certain values of "all") pronounce it with a silent "L".
This guy is going against the grain, apparently intentionally.
That's what I'm going on about here; he's totally out of sync with the commonly accepted pronunciation.
I didn't make that rule.

To me, it's an affectation, a conceit, like those here in the U.S. who insist on spelling it "theatre", "colour", "favour", "analyse", etc., etc. (And to me, and this is just a theory I can't prove, this indicates a deep-seated inferiority complex on the part of us Yanks, like the Brits (or Yurpeens) are so much more better than us that we must improve ourselves by adopting their speech and spelling.)

I'm not begrudging those spellings to those in the UK and elsewhere who use them; they just don't happen to be the way we spell things here.

My guess®™ is that since he's American much of his audience is as well, but I can't prove that.

He speaks English and he's on a multi-national broadcasting system, so his likely audience is RoW * 0.9. Hell, look at this Australian forum and compare the ration of Aussies to non-Aussies.

Your 'guess' is more like a demographically biased wish.

No, it was just that, a guess, and I could certainly be wrong about that.

Nobody here pronounces the word that way!

At least one guy, I'd say.
