Sandisk's new 400GB microSD card
« on: September 08, 2017, 08:17:31 am »
I know flash memory has made leaps and bounds but this is just insane. 400GB on a tiny bit of silicon! Unfortunately for you iPhone users, you're stuck with whatever Apple gave you or have something sticking out the bottom of your phone for extra capacity.

Yes, the size is improving. Unfortunately, the available capacity not really. I mean GB/Money values are stagnant. I suspect a cartel. Of course, they will blame "flooding in our factory", or earthquake or some other bullshit. And keep the prices up artificially by limiting the production values.
This one is a hostage of the interface. Writing speed is 10MB/sec, so it takes 11 hours to write it full.

You sure it's 10 MB/s? It's a UHS-I and should have 100MB/s according to the link of the OP.

That's the reading speed. Writing is A1 "Minimum sustained sequential writing speed 10 MB/s".

The flash production is just overbooked by the change from hdd to ssd and the higher demand for smartphones.
Esp larger capacity chips are already booked and sold for the coming year.
The smaller chips are cheap as ever, I can get 32GB cards for about 11 euro's while three years ago that was 1 euro/GB ;)

Oh my! You're right, I'd totally overlook that detail.

Would be nice if they would mention the writing speed in numbers too but they conveniently don't.

But is it reliable? Flash endurance and retention goes down the drain with TLC and QLC.

I'm using a Sandisk 256GB microSD in my Microsoft Surface as Dropbox drive. Amazing.
Write speed isn't important for that app.

But is it reliable?

I've probably had > 20 Sandisk cards die over the past 10 years.

It's supposed to be fast enough to support recording 4K video (in what codec/bit rate I don't know).
