the Microsoft-backed firm has now collapsed once it was revealed there was no artificial intelligence whatsoever. All the work was being performed by a huge workforce of more than 700 Indian employees.

I wonder if those 700 Indians have a lower CO2 footprint than an AI data center. >:D

ancient idea :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_Turk

The current use of "Mechanical Turk":  https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSMechTurk/latest/AWSMechanicalTurkGettingStartedGuide/SvcIntro.html
When the original Turk was brought to the US by Maelzel (inventor of the metronome and other less-valid machines), Edgar Allen Poe was not fooled by it.

Definitely so. A "small" datacenter draws min. 1 MW.
An average human behind a computer, with very little physical activity consumes around 100 W (80 W basal + 20 W brain). Times 700: 70 kW.

probably not that simple, humans need food, housing, transportation, etc. which all produces co2 during production
