Lattice FPGA Read the bitfile
« on: March 06, 2025, 10:43:48 am »
Hello, I have the Lattice FPGA “LCMXO640C-3TN144C”.

Firstly, I can’t find on the below datasheet the pinout of the pins from the chip.

Second, how can I read the bitfile (if it is not locked) from the “LCMXO640C-3TN144C”… what programmer I will need and also the Diamond IDE v3.14 can be used for this FPGA and the corresponding programmer?

Pinouts for FPGAs are commonly provided separately as a excel spreadsheet on the manufacturers website. (This is nice because it lets you automate making schematic symbols for them)

As for the cheapest programmer. It is best to buy one of their cheap devboards that includes a USB to JTAG onboard and rewire the JTAG connector to instead let you connect other boards to it. You can also find Chinese clones of the programmer hardware even cheaper, but it is not from the official vendor.

There is any link from this excel with the pins because I can't find it.

I found the below programmer. Does anyone knows if it is compatible with Diamond IDE (or if you have to suggest another program) and can support the “LCMXO640C-3TN144C” FPGA?

I tried this (which took well over a month to actually receive):
https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256802957528698.html

But could never get it to work with either Win11 or Fedora 40 (Linux).  No amount of fiddling with drivers or Lattice's idiotic programmer helped, at best it recognized the chip but programming consistently failed.

So screw that.  Got the actual Lattice item, which just worked.

I have a hunch the -2A version requires some old version of Windows and simply doesn't work on Linux at all.
The Lattice branded one I got is -2B.

I can only vouch that the FTDI dual MPSSE controller is working well to use the standard Lattice toolchain to program the ICE40UL1K devices. We have applied this same controller on our ICE-TRAY design:

To reflash the ICEPIK boards

I do believe that the -2B variation of this JTAG tool has a FPGA inside. You can dismantle the enclosure to confirm.
