I only had a day to make the video for submission for this so I went for Dave Jones style of video (recording the audio in real time and cutting to a minimum) and other than me being a bit straight laced I was really happy with how it turned out. I made a 15 minute video in about 6 hours (which i know is still pretty long), while the video I just released on my channel has taken me weeks to make and is only 12 minutes.
The Dave Jones style doesn't suit a lot of the videos I try do (projects or quick tutorials), but I'm definitely going to use it again for more overview style videos.
Regarding the viewer drop off, I think just given the wide topics being covered and the different styles being used it was probably always going to happen. But to give the numbers some context, my guest video currently has 6K views, which maybe poor by EEVblog standard but my most viewed video on my channel has 13K and the guest video is not even out a day! To be able to reach that size of an audience of people who are interested in electronics like that is amazing.
I've gained 600 subs since the video was released with lots of people already going through my older videos and leaving comments on them, I wouldn't have been able to buy this kind of exposure and engagement.
It's a pity that you did lose subs Dave, I thought that you might, but at least overall the number is still going up (You needed that boost from Bob to get you over the 500k mark
)
Thanks again!
Dave, Is my conclusion correct that if I did not get mail my video is not on the list ? Just asking so I can release the video on my own channel. Saves me time because I try to release 2 video's a month and have to much repair work at the moment to make one right now.
I watched them all, some I was already subscribed to, but I subscribed to 2 new ones. Not all where interesting for me but I then watched them how they made/edit the video. Things like camera angle, number of takes etc.
Although I probably not am chosen I would like to thank you for the change you offered.
The first one was good at 40k, but then it halved, and then halved again for many of the videos.
Still not bad for most channels. 5K is about the amount of views of all my videos together.
Can you someday make a sort of (educational) behind the scenes video ?

If "Marco Reps" was scheduled-in (still one of the most under-appreciated channels) the numbers would get crack-a-lack'in, but he doesn't always dream-up something as funny as his TS-100 video. As stated, it's not always about numbers, the community needs to thrive too

He was probably too busy harvesting wild capacitors to submit anything
Agreed, Marco Reps videos are so good that it almost deters me from making mine (as I can't match them)! The blend of entertainment and technical information is amazing. Honestly his videos are the ones I look forward to the most.
Yes, I took a risk on this, people not liking it, complaining or unsubscribing etc (which happened), but I thought it would be fun, and maybe I could help some other channels.
I think this was a great thing helping others and I hope you do it again.
Thank You
Got to admit I'm a bit disappointed in the views many of the guest videos got. The first one was good at 40k, but then it halved, and then halved again for many of the videos.
Of course it's always the title and thumbnail that decide if most people are going to watch, but I was hoping that more people would have "given them a go" so the speak. And of course you have to factor in the "I only subscribe for Dave's videos" people, which I entirely understand of course.
Anyway, it's been an interesting experiment.
Perhaps a generic intro by you personally introducing them as a guest video would take some confusion away and improve engagement.

I had a gut feeling that it is not going to pick up, so I was one of those voted for "i do not like the idea".
Changes at YouTube again (I think). A fellow forum member just post a video lamenting the changes.
I have barely escaped with my 5763 watch hours in the last year and $127 of earning.
Is it just me or anyone else had noticed, it appears that the last couple of guest videos were not included in the EEVBlog specific section on the forum?
Feel free to make the thread if there is something to discuss.
Here are the view counts: 43k, 21k, 24k, 29k, 16k, 13k, 19k, 20k, 11k, 7k
Keep in mind, one video per day is a lot more than daves average, I'm not sure what that would be, two videos per week? Even if there were one new video every day produced by Dave, I am sure the view count would also start to drop off. A lot of people can't keep up, have other channels to watch, etc.

Again, sorry, this one I did reply to to but it was private, and then when you released it for me to view, I must have again got distracted and didn't reply. It didn't make the cut, sorry, the final one is from Kaizer Power Electronics
I feed bad now, I did try to reply to all submissions and thought I had.

I'd noticed that too, our local YT reviewer Defpom (Scott) told me his vid was up on Dave's channel and sure enough when I looked for it it was.
But no mention that a fellow forum member had got one of Dave's slots.
Scott got ~700 subs from it.

To be fair, watching your video, 19 seconds is enough to tell what the video is going to be about.
It's likely that Dave wasn't interested in the type of video that you made. Thats just something you'll have to deal with.
And also @Brumby
Sure!
I'm not looking for en explanation. I think my video can not competition with others in a lot of aspects!
As I told I'm not complaining about that. I'm angry sure! How would not be. Just Expressing my feelings
Sorry I didn't reply, entirely my fault
I don't recall exactly, but I think I got distracted watching your video and forgot to return to it and hence reply.
I remember thinking it was going to go on the under consideration list, it's not like I didn't like it and it wasn't worthy, I simply got distracted and goofed it.
Oh looks like I'm unlucky ....
But Thanks for the information!
No problem! If there is a Next time I will try again ;-)
And complain directly if I don't get a response

At least I was not the only one
Maybe there will be 14 Gast videos after all
Dave is making content with very less effort. Nearly no cutting and talking on the fly. It's like 2 times overhead I think. SURE some videos are much more effort but in average there are not.
How do you think I have survived producing over 1200 videos and staying sane
As for "nearly no cutting", my average video has maybe 50-70 clips in it, really long ones can have hundreds of individually shot clips.
And I "cut" a good lot of those clips too, so my average video might have nearly 100 or more "cuts" in it.
Yes I simply press record and "talk on the fly", but what's the point?, that's my style, nothing else works for me. Not that it matters, every content producer has their own style.
The point was that I was angry! Sorry! .... It fits you well ;-)
The last video (Tutorial about Spectre and Meltdown) I did in one day ;-) But I had to remove like 30 "AAAM"s.... I cannot talk freely before camera I don't know way ... maybe over time I will get better :-)
Thanks for the replay anyway
For those of us too lazy/busy to click on all of them - is there a list?
Looks like i'm going to win the award for least views, Kerry has passed me out already
Even at that, I'm nearly double the subs I was when it was released so I'm certainly not feeling bad about it!

I'd also like to say thanks for the opportunity to have a guest video hosted. I primarily do videos on older test equipment repairs (
TGSoapbox) and functionality and it was a great opportunity to let people know that content like mine is out there (if you pick up some common older HP gear then I might have a video on it for you).
Thanks Dave - Really appreciate it.

TonyG - great channel! We originally listed your channel as "Personal projects in the IoT space" but very nice change to be sure! (especially for guys in the TEA group..). I will suggest text changes and your playlist URL - Thanks!

You got a new subscriber, I got a lot old HP gear like 8903A audio analyzer, 3582A spectrum analyzer and a synthesizer modulator that I can not remember the name of and its behind a sleeping kid atm

You beat me hands down on the number of views per minute of video bases though
. I guess it all depends on what Dave's general audience are most interested in.

That's going to happen. It's happens with my own videos. One video might get 100K views, another might get 20k.

Maybe it has something to do with the title "Minimum Viable Function". I have no idea what that means? (I am not very smart)
I think your YT name in the title would help. Especially since Factory 400 is very unique. I would guess that your setup is the most unique on YT - absolutely amazing. So if someone sees "Factory 400" in the title they would know it is from you.
Take a lead from Daves naming of his videos. Name + Num + Title
Also use as many characters as you can and keep up your very very good work.
Excellent feedback! Thanks.
Next scheduled video is high precision PCB milling attempt. Going to build some special fixtures and test some high-end cutting tools. Should be fun exploring it in a way that you cannot blame the tools. The CNC machine is extremely precise.... hoping for 4mil trace 4mil space consistently.
Combines electronics and the CNC machine. Everyone loves serious CNC stuff.
Short and misplld from my mobile......
Nice workshop you have. Mine is even smaller but I do not much assembling. I only made a few photometers and some high resistant standards. So I do not need as much space but more would be very convenient.
Most of my work is repair (testgear, calibration gear and some industrial and automotive stuff). My shop is only around 16 square meters. But I'm thinking about adapting (part of) my garage like you did. The same reason, why rent an expensive space if you have one, also saves a lot of time and costs in travelling.
Sunscribed to your channel.
My last video (the one I entered for Daves list)
