About contrast and brightness , I have set them 70 & 30 .
About the resolution I am a bit confused of what to use at its need.
I am happy that I found on the menu an setting that the monitor becomes 4:3 , and at 1024x768 the resolution that I was using on my 19" CRT , makes everything to look as with the CRT .. or very close enough. ( Yes I have black bars at right and left.. )
Now I am looking for some short of software that will divide my screen in windows ,
so all my main software applications to look as 4:3 , and the extra space to be for secondary needs.
That's what i have in my mind right now.
About the calibration , thanks for the advices, I will look at it as last .
The DELL came almost calibrated .

man! you are the one who want to stick to the 80's. well ok i understand that. and you are the first man i heard wanting the such a
SplitView and
WinSplit software. not a true split though, just saving you a couple of click i think, i prefer the manual method, and all the 16:9 fullscreen. its just now i kinda needing the multiple monitor feature that comes with my previous display card, just a click on the tasktray, then i got a brand new fresh empty desktop to work on. i always keep the taskbar stacked heavily with multiple app. luckily there is "Minimized All Windows" aka "Show Desktop" and IE8 got "new tab" instead of "new window".

thats what most people without the calibrator always say. but when they got it, they wil say, oooh f*ck! my screen goes pink!
Yes, use the native resolution (1920x1080) and increase the font settings if it's too small.
I certainly would not use any other resolution on a LCD monitor than its native resolution. Resolution difference is not large enough to allow decent scaling. Of course there is picture but it looks horrible in any other input resolution. I have Eizo S2410W (1920x1200 resolution, 24", S-PVA) for ?5 years now, and still going strong. I'm satisfied if it lasts at least for another five.

Janne

How does a person know if the monitor is calibrated or not without a calibrator?
I have 2 of the same model monitors set to the same exact settings in the menu however, the color is different between the two
How does a person know if the monitor is calibrated or not without a calibrator?
get another person's monitor with calibrator and compare it side by side.
its like having a mass and you dont know its weight and ask, how do i know this is a 1kg mass? without a scale. another thing to note, monitor will be calibrated every now and then coz the intensity, color will change in time. with spyder there is option to calibrate your monitor every week, month or 3 months and a warning will popped out saying your calibration is out of date. for me, i will set the calibration to the longest period, coz from experience, there will be only slight shift after months and all i care much is monitor to print consistency.
ps: and another fun thing about colorimeter is, you can spend on a calibrator, and later buy an elcheapo monitor and get it consistent will all who have that calibrator all around the globe. my samsung and chimei look the same!
I would be the happiest person if at the full resolution the menu of the software like word - photoshop and others did not look that tiny ..
The only wide resolution that works for me so far, are the 1360-768 , its the most clear about scaling at list.
Yes technically you all are correct , just my blue eyes disagrees with you .
what matters most is that you are happy. if you think you dont need a calibrator, and you'll be happy with that, then by all mean, game all you like!
