Learning LISP & PROLOG coming from Java background?
« on: June 19, 2026, 11:54:24 am »
Learning LISP can be vast. But I need to answer only certain types of questions:

- how is list manipulation and recursion implemented in LISP.

- Explain PROLOG's resolution and unification mechanism with an example program.

That is all i need to learn. Enough to recall in exam and write in paper.

I found really interesting sources to learn.

https://www2.cs.sfu.ca/CourseCentral/310/pwfong/Lisp/1/tutorial1.html

I learnt till recursion. And I will continue reading it if I do not find any extra resources. I have java background and I wish I could learn this efficiently using my Java background.

Lisp moved past doing everything with lists 40+ years ago. By the time you get to Common Lisp the language is very little different to Python, Javascript, or (most closely) Julia and you use it in exactly the same way.

Yeah I am using CLISP. It is not same as python though. Those parantheses at the start are amazingly confusing.

Yeah I am using CLISP. It is not same as python though. Those parantheses at the start are amazingly confusing.

Parentheses (Lisp) or significant whitespace (Python) or braces and semicolons (Javascript) are absolutely the most trivial differences between the languages, and don't affect what you can do with them, or the actual structure of programs, in the slightest.

I don't even count surface stuff like that when comparing languages.

Prolog on the other hand is an utterly different and alien language.

Just finished learning LISP. Moving onto prolog. I can understand what you said about prolog.
