binary counter Idea proposition
« on: October 31, 2025, 11:34:43 am »
Hi,
some use the circuit below as Asyncrounouse binary counter, perhaps it will work and no with high frequencies?!.
I would like to ask you if I can do a small change to make this circuit work as Synchronous counter and maybe without add any additional components?

Thank you.

Unless you're tied to D-type Flip Flops, there are several 4 bit counter chips
in verious versions: sync vs async, binary vs decade count, etc.

  SN74160, SN74161, SN74162, SN74163
  SN74192, SN74193

Pick your poison.

A synchronous counter much easier with JK-flipflops:

https://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/counter/count_3.html

You can convert D-flipflops to JK ones, but it requires additional components:

some use the circuit below as Asyncrounouse binary counter,
That is called a ripple counter. One FF clocks the next, Very simple but the outputs have increasing delays.

I would like to ask you if I can do a small change to make this circuit work as Synchronous counter and maybe without add any additional components?

Yes, you can change to divide by 16 with no increasing delay, all FF the same clock, aka Synchronous counter.

No, you cannot do what without adding components.

Look at the internal diagrams of Sync 4 bit counters like 74HC161

You can make a synchronous counter without  extra components using JK-FFs instead of D-FFs.
Somehow, people have forgotten how powerfull JK-FFs are.
