[CRIMPERS] Engineer PAD-01 vs PA-09 models
« on: October 04, 2017, 08:48:11 pm »
I'm the lucky owner of an Engineer PA-09 crimper and I was thinking to buy also the PA-21 unit, but I discovered that they produce also the PAD-01 bundle (at the end of page):
PAD-01 can be find at a reasonable price at HobbyKing: about 89€

- Have someone of you used the (PAD-11 + PAD-12 + PAD-13) = PAD-01 crimper? If yes, what are you opinions?
- How does PAD-01 compare against PA-09/PA-21 combination?

Any suggestions/comparisons/comments are welcome!

.    TIA
_      Elio.

[added later] In general I use a single family of connectors for every project (maybe with different pin counts) so I will not need to change dies every so often.

I bought the PA-09, PA-20, and PA-21 tools after having the same problem.

I decided on three tools to avoid having to change the jaws out. It also makes for a lighter, more compact tool. Additionally, in case I ever get in a situation where I need to work sizes across two different jaw sets at the same time, I would be better off with the separate tools.

I like them overall. It would be nice if the crimping surface was deeper to better work with larger pins. As it is I just need to crimp 3 times: twice for the wire, and once for the insulation. Note that it splits the wire crimp. Otherwise it seems to hold just fine.

I've not had access to any of the PAD models, but based on specs, it will be able to do more connectors than the combination of a PA-09 & PA-21 due to the third die. And as it's longer, will do the small and medium sized connectors with less strain/fatigue.

It's also a better bargain given the number of terminals it can do, and the fact it has a case is a nice addition as well IMHO.

For small crimps I found the smaller head and frame of the PA more comfortable to use than the PAD frame, but you have that covered already.
The PAD kit is a good investement if you want to cover a decent range. It goes beyond the PA 9/20/21 on the large end, and has more leverage.  Watch your fingers on the wire cutter.  For doing a lot of crimps, finding a full width ratcheting tool is a better, but a more expensive, way to go.

Take into consideration that cross the tools, there is often a design difference in crimp height and thickness for the same noted crimp width, affecting wire capacity and crimped length.  Check the charts at  http://www.engineer.jp/en/products/pa09e.html. For the smaller die sizes, this may alter what tool you decide on.
