KiCad one schema, multiple layouts? [SOLVED]
« on: June 13, 2016, 09:15:48 am »
For the life of me, i can't figure out how to create two PCB's (or more) layouts based on one Schema.

Running KiCad 4.x

Anyone has a clue?

Much obliged!

Copy the project and create a PCB for each project?

Copy the project and create a PCB for each project?

Yeah that came to mind, but if you change the schema. You need to do it twice.

Im designing a circuit for a THT and SMD layout. So one schema, 2 layouts  :-//

I haven't tried it, but you could try creating the default (say THT) PCB within the project, open PCBNEW.exe (from the KiCAD install), create a new PCB based on the netlist from the project, save the (presume SMT) PCB into the project folder, then you should, in theory, have both PCB's within the project.

I don't think KiCAD has back / forward annotation so I don't think you will sever any links between them, it all used to be done by manually importing the netlist.

Try it!

Well, found it. Not sure if its logical, but you basically open the layout, then then goto File -> Save As.

That essentially makes a copy (.kicad_pcb).

Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure this will work as KiCad stores the footprints in the schematic file (F2 field) in addition to in the netlist file.

Code: [Select]
$Comp
L CP C1
U 1 1 555F3EC3
P 2600 5650
F 0 "C1" V 2650 5750 40  0000 L CNN
F 1 "22uF Tan" V 2550 5350 40  0000 L CNN
F 2 "Caps_SMD:cap_smd_tant_C" H 2600 5650 60  0001 C CNN
F 3 "" H 2600 5650 60  0000 C CNN
1    2600 5650
1    0    0    -1
$EndComp

In addition there is a major refactoring is going on with the eeschema code, so these kind of workarounds might not work in the future.

Also, this post should be in General PCB/EDA/CAD Discussions » KiCad.

@Thor-Arne

I got it (see message).

Any moderator that can move this to the correct folder (sorry didn't realise that)?  :palm:
