USB operation
« on: March 12, 2013, 05:05:13 pm »
Hey, there everyone.
Can anyone give a link to a thread that explains the function thoroughly of a USB memory drive when it communicates with a PC?
Thanks

The USB spec is freely available here: http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/usb_20_110512.zip

It's highly non-trivial, especially if you want to think about partitioning, filesystems and any other layers on top of USB - but even USB itself is a pretty complicated system.

USB in a nutshell is the best overview of the bus I've seen, but it barely scratches the surface of how an actual device functions.

Check out Travis Goodspeed's projects.  His current one is emulating flash drives in software using a sort of USB spoofing device he built.  His stuff is really interesting.  The youtube videos of his conference talks are great too.
