Looking for help to identify component
« on: May 24, 2019, 06:30:14 am »
Hello,

I got an old IBM laptop  from ebay and it worked for 5 minutes and died. Once opened I discovered some signs of leakage around component
that I am not sure about. I've seen capacitors leaking, but this looks like some kind voltage regulator.

On the picture attached I am pointing to the substance around that area. Most of it was around MAX637 (switching regulator)  and SMD10 . Capacitors near was clean and looked good.

Anyone can help me to identify that SMD10 component ? Could it leak ?

Thank you!

They are transistors and they can't leak.

The leakage is likely from the two electrolytic capacitors, which leads don't look so fresh. Or something else entirely.

This is what I though. Will try swapping capacitors.

SMD10P p-channel MOSFETs.

That could be a spill/accident.  What do you meant it no longer works?

try cleaning with denature (rubbing alcohol)

Especially if it's under a vent or something, I'd suspect a spill or something else as well.  Could be the caps, but you'd think there would be a little pooling under them, unless the unit was oriented that the transistors were downward from the caps when the leak happened.

Once received I plugged it in and it turned on normally. Everything was good for about 2-3 minutes.

Later screen went black. but indicator panel  is partially functional (e-g battery charging showing something, caps-lock, num-lock showing something ).

At that point i took it apart and discovered that substance and it was kinda bubbling around these elements. I cleaned up the area and after power is on I don't see more of the substance coming out from any elements.

Other thing I noticed that heatsink on the back of the laptop where power plugs-in is getting very hot.

So at this point I ordered capacitors as a first step in attempt to repair it.

Thanks.

There was no indication of liquid spell. FDD disk was above that area and it look very clean. I took keyboard apart and did not see any signs of liquid some dust - yes but no leaks.

Thanks.
