Qianli Gorilla 6558 Trinocular Stereo Microscope 6.5‑58X
« on: September 11, 2026, 05:17:49 pm »
I am shopping for a new Trinocular Stereo Microscope.

I found no thread about this Stereo Microscope 6.5‑58X which has some interesting features for electronics repair:

- integrated light 95% High-CRI module with
   - curing UV light
   swappable with
   - an integrated IR thermal camera (I assume it is similar to the Qianli Fire Eye Pro )

- power switchable USB-C ports for generic accessories management on Rabbit Cage metal bracket (1/4 & 3/8 Arri-standard threads)
- 6.5‑58X, with 0.5x or 0.7x "teleconverter" to adjust the working distance
- Laser coaxial 3D positioning
- adjustable diopter eyepiece 10x/23
- 4k camera available in bundle for the Trinocular

For less than $1K, it is very attractive to me, available in Aliexpress and other eshops.
Moreover there are some positive reviews on youtube.

I do not expect the optic quality of a Leica, but should be good enough.

Anything I should know before I pull the trigger?

One question is whether the stand will work for you or if you'll need to replace it with something else like a boom arm.

Issue I see with the UV light is you can only have the UV or thermal in place, not both. Personally I wouldn't want a thermal cam attached to a microscope, unless I had the money for a second thermal cam to use off the scope. ~$180 for the thermal cam module addon.

The price I see for the 6558 on aliexpress is $480 for a base unit with UV and 0.7x. I guess the 1k price is with all accessories.

Looks like all the reviews i have seen are scripted.. I want to see details... pull some plastic covers see the mechanics etc..

I could not decide based on his video. Toward the end, he states the optics of the other microscopes he tested, especially the YCS 71, are better.

I do not think you buy this because of the optics, but because of the versatility and accessories.

It is very practical to have immediately the IR cameras there for repairs, and all the rest is nice.
The UV light could be important in repair, but for me I would just leave the IR on all the time.
Maybe in the problem finding phase IR on, then in the repair phase swap it with the UV...

Looks like all the reviews i have seen are scripted.. I want to see details... pull some plastic covers see the mechanics etc..

same feeling, kind of... This is why I was hoping to find an owner with this post.

Still it remains a very attractive device for my needs.

It like looks a well thought out package. I just wish that the review contained some sharper imaging to help decide how the day-to-day reality would compare to the loving narrative.

Optical quality can be subjective, IMO unless there is something clearly bad/faulty, it doesn't really matter for electronics use.

These reviews have some good cam images at least:

All of these cheap microscopes are similar internally, while it would be interesting, you wouldn't see much of value.

Do you guys think the IR camera would work with my Linux PC?

All of these cheap microscopes are similar internally, while it would be interesting, you wouldn't see much of value.

Here is an example: youtube.com/watch?v=mOyALDSAHBk
There seem to be at least 3  CCC versions of Greenough-type microscopes.(Copies of different Nikon generations?) Most obvious differences being in IPD adjustment mechanism.

But nowadays there is also CMO(Common Main Objective)/Parallei -type in sub 500$ budget options.
SUNSHINE R360 Pro/MECHANIC ROBOT SMART EYE
Interesting price point as cheapest CMO microscope from Nikon/Leica is ~6000$ or so.
https://www.accu-scope.com/a-look-at-stereo-microscopes-and-their-applications/

Chinese ones seem decent nowadays. Suprisingly  little if any difference between 150$ Kaisi, Vevor, ~2000$ Amscope or oldschool Nikon.
150$  Kaisi with 30$ polarized lightsource is easily 10 times better than any Nikon/Leica if you don't have polarized light on them.

Be careful repeating the hype, it appears those designs of microscope are not (comparable or possibly even technically) CMO designs with stereoscopic optical paths.

The objectives are far too small in diameter to be believable (or comparable).

SUNSHINE R360 Pro/MECHANIC ROBOT SMART EYE....

I still have great trouble associating myself with that thesis, but right now I have too many irons in the fire to demolish it.

Hadn't seen the other thread earlier. Unfortunately it had very little actual information one way or other if it  is mono-only or stereo but with lot less stereographic effect.
Depending on use and user smaller stereographic effect could be also bonus.  Greenough makes 5mm electrolytic capacitor look like skyscraper.

You lost me there. So does a CMO. Some of the older designs had quite pronounced doming (perspective distortion).

The fact that they made it is great, but as others have said there are too many flaws to the point I won't even bother to get one to try. I think they should have targeted a higher price point, if it meant no serious optical issues.

Cheapest CMO from nikon is SMZ800N at $4200: https://www.spachoptics.com/products/nikon-smz800n-stereo-microscope-with-plan-1x-objective
The cheapest amscope clone is the PM200B which is a copy of the SMZ800 at $2600: https://amscope.com/products/pm200b

There may be others on alibaba I have not looked at yet. But it tells you something about the cost to manufacture IMO.

Limbo a little lower with a Motic K-700.

Yeah cheaper than I thought: https://www.digital-usb-microscopes.com/K-Series-cate.html

But it comes at a cost, the K400 is fixed step magnification. The K700 only has a zoom ratio of 5.2:1 which is less than the typical 6.7:1 (SMZ800 = 8:1). Both use 45 degree eyepieces.

Both lines evolved from the original designs that Wild Heerbrugg tried to get Motic to make, but were then not quite up to it. The K400 copied and its second generation refined, the Wild M5; the two generations of the K700, copied then refined the Wild M7A.

The M7 was Wild's first zoom stereo microscope and conservatively designed. If you do not mind a quick swap, the M7, M7A, K700 all support 20X eyepieces without empty magnification, giving you 6-31X and 12-62X zoom ranges without the hassles of adding and removing an auxiliary objective. I believe Motic discontinued the K700 a year or two ago, ending the over 50 year run of a ca. 1970 design.
