LeCroy 3034 losing ethernet connection
« on: October 17, 2025, 11:24:52 am »
Mine has started doing this. I can reconnect it by going into Utilities and messing around with the network settings but nothing obviously works reliably. Mostly it does not connect.

I use ETH just for their WaveStudio remote access feature, which is really handy at times.

Swap switch ports with some other active machine.

Yeah - it came back after I unplugged and replugged the ETH cable :)

But then died again after a few hours.

I have it on a fixed IP, the LAN, but I noticed the DNS is 4.4.4.4 which is wrong; the google ones are 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4. Can't change it with just a trackball, without connecting a USB keyboard, AFAICT. But with a fixed IP, does this matter?

Good point - could be a bad switch port.

Fixed IP connection doesn't need DNS.

Fixed IP connected device though can have its own ambitions.

I would try different Ethernet patch cable. Also put a drop of IPA on Ethernet connector before plugging it in and wiggle it a little bit when plugged.
RJ45 connectors that have nothing plugged in collect dust.

Different cable, different switch port... no use after it does. What brings it back is a power cycle.

On a related note, does anyone know how to stop this WaveStudio startup error, when it tries to display Teledyne Lecroy News (presumably a dead URL now) at each startup

I can't find a config for it.

It looks like they have implemented a primitive web browser in there and it is out of date. Answering Yes or No produces the same result. Eventually the errors go away.

Is the invalid character error from the scope or web file?

Maybe the machine does more of those "secret" connections.
Add your own server, Arduino is just fine.
Find scope's hosts file and add name-address mapping manually.

Then you can answer to all requests, maybe sending a simple html file.
Other channel can report what was requested.

The scope's PC interface software displays that when started.

I am not bothered about these startup errors. A lot of equipment does this after some years, as the URLs which it accesses to "call back the church" go dead, or are changed to serve JS which the equipment doesn't support because it has only a primitive browser.

I can't tell if the "invalid char" is from the scope or from the Lecroy website. I would assume the latter since you get it regardless of whether the scope is running.

Website is more probable.

I guess you must check scope's network activity.
One possibility is to find an old 10Mb hub and connect WireShark.

If Machine doesn't accept 10Mb put 10/100 switch in between.

It is an interesting point whether the issue may go away if ETH is dropped to 10mbps. I have an old 10mbps hub.

I got a reply from LeCroy (amazingly) suggesting I use a subnet of 255.255.0.0 rather than the much more usual 255.255.255.0.

This is on a fixed IP.

If I am not back then this solved the problem, although I cannot see how :)
