Old Philips T&M again - PM3551 Logic Analyzer
« on: May 30, 2016, 05:19:12 pm »
I just found a PM3551 Logic Analyzer on ebay. Complete with pods, manuals, etc.

As I'm a little bit of a collector of old Philips-Gear (I already have a Function-Gen, Counter and Scope made by Philips), I'm naturally curious about this one.

Has anyone worked with these devices or knows what happened to the CRT in this particular device? It looks like the screen has drops of water on it, but the seller says that they are on the INSIDE of the screen.
Does this model have a protective plastic screen in front of the CRT?

Obviously, the PM358x-Series would be a much better LA, but the last one on ebay escaped my Budget a bit. And this one has the old philips-styling :)

Have one of these, plus a spare mainframe without any pods. On mine the plastic implosion guard started to separate from the CRT giving the strange water drop effect. Just ping the plastic off and re-glue it.

Bought mine because it had lots of disassemblers, might have to power it up and see which, can't remember.

There are two types of interface boards, wide and slow, narrow and fast. All standard TTL and circuit diagrams in the manuals. Another old logic analyser worth looking for is the Dolch series, the LAM 4850 was the largest.

How can you go wrong, buy it!

Good to hear that the problem with the screen is not unrepairable.

How did you remove the implosion-protection? And what glue did you use to put it back on there?

Btw. is the CRT some kind of standard-module that could be replaced by an LCD without too much effort, or does it use some custom protocol / displays vectors instead of a rasterized picture?

My used analyser doesn't suffer from the problem, I had two spares I scrapped which did so not had to reglue it.

The CRT module is just a standard 15,625/50 green monitor, easily available from anywhere. If you have an LCD with composite video input then should just drop in. There is a video out BNC on the back, find an old security system monitor as a replacement. Not certain if I kept the two moniotors out of the units I scrapped or not.

See it sold.

Just powered my one up, working fine until it tripped the house power. Looks like another one for the scrap pile.

Probably the line-filter capacitor on your unit.

Yes, the one on ebay has been sold, but not to me. I'm going to hunt for a PM3585 again^^

Btw. I found pictures of the inside of the pods: quite a few SMD-Parts for early 1980s^^
