Recommendations for replacement fans for MSO1074Z
« on: November 04, 2014, 05:08:19 pm »
I just got a MSO1074Z and the fan is too loud for my taste so I'm going to replace it.

I searched the forum here and found some product links for fans for other Rigol oscilloscopes but I wasn't sure if this series uses the same size/rating so I wanted to check if somebody else has already done this.

So far these look promising, assuming that what I need is a 60mm x 25mm fan running at 12v:

Any other/better recommendations, especially ones that are known to work and are noticeably quieter?

It seems that what's inside is actually a 50mm x 50mm x 15mm 12V fan, the SUNON ME50151V3-000C-A99 (datasheet: http://www.sunon.com/tw/products/pdf/DCFAN/ME5015_C.pdf). It draws 65mA, runs at 4900 RPM and produces 12.9 CFM airflow at 30.1 dBA.

I'll look around for quieter replacement fans that fit these dimensions.

From the teardowns, it seems there is space for a much thicker fan. Perhaps even as much as 40mm can be used.

There is indeed a lot of extra space so a thicker fan would probably fit.

I ordered these four fans from amazon, I'll try them all and keep the one that's best:

http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B008S1DN66 Gelid Solutions Silent 5 Case Fan

http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00261ABFK Scythe SY501012M 50mm x 10mm Silent Mini Kaze fan

I'll follow up here with the results.

I used this one in my 1054z.  It worked out well and is much quieter than the original one without the need for any additional modifications other than changing to a 2-pin plug.

I know it's easier for Rigol to keep the fans the way they are but it would be nice if they would start doing like good PC power supply manufacturers do and use screw on finger guards over the hole for the fan. This way you could easily remove it and make them quieter.
Blowing air through little sharp edged holes in an enclosure seems to make fan noise even louder.

Great to know, thanks for the confirmation!

I got the four fans and did some noise measurements with an iPhone app (SPLnFFT). This was with the fans not yet mounted into the Rigol, just taken out of their boxes and hooked up to 12V.

Sunon (the one that came built in)51.7 dB
Fractal47.0 dB
Scythe46.5 dB
Gelid51.0 dB
Evercool66 dB

The Fractal and Scythe ones sound very similar to me so I am going to try these. The Evercool is insanely loud.

12 volts out of case, might not be the best way to test this.  The 1000z doens't seem to run the fan anywhere near full speed, not to mention that the fan design and case shape will interact.

There's a whole lot more than the indicated 4.7db (51.7 - 47) difference in sound level between the original fan and the Fractal after I installed it, but I forgot to make before/after sound level measurements in situ, maybe you can.

Thanks for posting this!

Yes I agree, not the most useful measurement, I was just curious how they would compare like that.

I installed the Scythe fan in the unit and it is indeed not run at full speed. It does seem a lot better, unfortunately I also didn't take a "before" measurement with the original fan, so it's subjective. It's still not as quiet as I'd like it to be but I can live with it.

If you search the 1000Z threads, you'll find a few recommendations. After comparing specs of all fans on the market, I ended up with the Gelid Silent 5 as posted here:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/new-rigol-ds1054z-oscilloscope/msg522516/#msg522516

A couple of other people mentioned using it and being happy with it too.

It has CFM and pressure specs really close to the original Sunon and is still reasonably quiet. At idle, it is substantially quieter than the Sunon. Certainly audible, but very comfortable to work with. At full blast it is closer to the Sunon, but then I have never heard it spin up in real life, so...

In all cases, you'll need to solder a 2-pin connector to the fan. I bought some from Amazon (so that I could keep the original fan in case I need to sell or warranty the unit).

Be careful with changing the fan. I ordered one of the Gelit Silent 5 fans and installed it, as it should have the same RPM and airflow. It was really quiet but there was almost no airflow. So checked the original one and the Gelit connected to 12V and both had approximately the same RPM, the Gelit was a bit more quiet but had a little less airflow.
The DS1000z seems to have a resistor in series, as the original one has a RPM of around 3000-3500 when installed (don't know the exact RPM anymore), but the Gelit only around 2/3 (2000 RPM). The Gelit draws more current, that would explain the RPM drop.
IF the Rigol has a temperature sensor installed and adjusts the power to the fan the Gelit would be a very good solution. When it gets hot it will have almost the same airflow as the original one. If the Rigol only has a resisor in series, it might get too hot.
Does someone know if the DS1000z has a regulation for teh fan?

The fan has its own power supply rail at 10.17 volts unloaded.

I opened my DS1000z again and made some comaprisons between the original fan and the Gelit:
RPM at 12V: original: 5100 Gelit 4300
RPM installed: original 3800 (supply voltage 8,25V), Gelit 2280 (6,9V)
The different supply voltages are due to the higher current of the Gelit, there seems to be a 80 Ohm resistor in series.
When I reduce the RPM of the original fan to the RPM of the Gelit, they seem to have the same noise. I don't want to use the Gelit as there is almost no airflow at all when installed. A better way would be to put a resistor in series to the original fan to get the RPM a bit down (maybe around 3000RPM)

Hi!

Unfortunately, I also have a loud Rigol and the Gelid Solutions Silent 5 is recommended everywhere.

But I don't find it that much quieter, although I have already installed it at a distance of 5mm from the housing.

Now I've found this thread too. ;-)
I hadn't read anywhere before that there was no full 12V.

What would be the most important place where you should measure the temperature of the Rigol?
On the mini heat sink?

Couldn't such controllers also be built in?
https://www.ebay.de/itm/273286823292
https://www.ebay.de/itm/233638901105

Unfortunately, they all need a 4-pole fan and they are rare in this size.
