My Fake GPIB has been great since I sorted out the 34401a setup (as per the clone thread). For a bench meter it works great and I swing between it and the GW121 or both.

Beware however as it was recently calibrated to keep an eye on it over time you need accurate voltage and resistance standards then a better meter to check it and ........  :-DD
Which thread is that? I think I may have overlooked it.

98% of the GPIB adapters on evilbay are fakes including a bunch being sold in the US as 'real'  :--

For all you hp nuts out there.

HP (by way of Harrison Laboratories) 895A, a 320V 1.5 ( :o) amp power supply. That is only a 500W transformer....  ::)

Volt's meter is buster other than that it works, but it does buzz when adjusted and above 200 volts. I can't load test it, for lack of a resistor that can take 500W without vaporizing. Why, you may ask, did i buy a power supply this big and heavy? Because i could and i liked the adjustment knob on it.  :-DD

It has fine and course pots, but course is a 10 turn pot.

Who am i kidding i meant for everyone reading this.  :-DD

 :-DD Gotta pass for now. Too big. Anyway, if I want something to max out my DMMs, I need 1000V. :o

Ah. So, most likely a clone. But they use the real chip, apparently, which is why they still seem to work fine. Anyway, have a read through the thread.

We did ours Saturday.  Surprisingly, after paying the tax preparer, we ended up with a net refund of $82.  According to the preparer, next year will be much better with the new tax laws.  Be nice to get a break.  25% tax bracket down to 12% and a much better refund. :-+ :-+
Doesn't a refund mean you overpaid? I don't really see the advantage.

Yes, it does.  A little overpayment if fine.  My goal is to go to the preparer and get enough back to cover the bill for preparation and have enough left coming back to take SWMBO out for a nice sushi dinner.  If it is bigger, no big deal.  We don't have enough money to really invest for big returns.  Savings accounts and certificates of deposit pay bugger all interest any way, so any bigger refund is like found money in a perverse sort of way.

There’s a dead one on eBay here for 15 quid. I am tempted but it’s buyer collects from Kidderminster. Would make a nice radio power supply.

The i look at my little switcher which does 16V at 30A and weighs nothing and I suddenly cant be bothered.

You're right with the linear, but ....  :-DD

Edit: actually I've had some problems with linear power supplies and direct conversion receivers. You can hear the hum even with pretty extreme filtering (two LC pi filters, low ESR filter caps, decent linear regulators [LT], shielded power cables, single ground bonding connection). My SMPS has a "noise offset" control which means I can move it and any harmonics out of the passband of the entire thing.  :-+

Remove the contents and sell it to Apple's Elk Grove factory service center as RF-safe storage so they can keep their "accidental" botnet from dialing 911 all the time...

I actually have... back at my granduncle's place... a 386 PC I built in the case from a NASTEC thin-client server that was supposedly EMP-hardened to Mil-spec of the day. I can tell you it is DEFINITELY a true and proper boat anchor; 4 layers of steel in an interleave design make it a svelte 80-ish lbs (35-40 kilos) in a 2 foot x 2 foot x 1.5 foot package. The last I saw it, it was holding up a TV; I keep telling myself I'm going to put a glass top over it and use it for a coffee table one day...
