Responding to part of a post and ignoring the rest is rarely a good idea.
Without wanting to be unpleasant, it's essentially an argument from authority.

What is an argument about what and from what authority?
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

just heard that a friend of mine died in a plane crash. Apparently stalled and went straight into the ground.
Bloody hell. I'm pissed. RIP Lutz.

That happened to a friend of mine, although technically it was a spin-stall. We were sad, but consoled ourselves with the thought that he died quickly doing something he enjoyed.

I want to "go out with my boots on", too.

I'll disagree with him here in that he's treating the order of operations mnemonic as literal - PEMDAS - I learned it as multiplication and division are 'equal' in weight, as are addition and subtraction.  They are performed in order, left to right.  With addition and subtraction being equal in weight, his 8-2+1 equation is unambiguous and operations are performed as it's read across - 8-2 is 6; 6+1 is 7.

For those who're interested in such things, I discovered this poor little aPF 4-banger on my first trip to the Thrift in months; it was all alone, neglected & unloved in a baggie on the wall for $2.99. It has those bubble LEDs where each segment is itself segmented into multiple chips; I've always loved these and the bubble LEDs with the rounded numbers that looked like this:

I've included a bunch of pics of it nekkid while I was doing cleaning... enjoy. :-+

bubble leds and an = key.................beauty eh.
Only if it gives the mathematically correct result to "1+2*3=". If not, then even the Sinclair Scientific would be more accurate :)

I'd prefer an ambiguous calculator that answers... Could be 7, could be 9, who the fuck knows?

Just as well I buy tools from Lidl then, they come with a free 3 year warranties, never had an issue with them yet.

Parkside is the Lidl brand.  I've got an air driven ratchet from them. It is extremely good at consuming air, and it is   >:D |O loud, but it pulls 65 Nm as advertised (according to my quick tests against a Norbar torque wrench, that is.) and is quite nice when you've got a tedious job at an awkward angle. One thing I'm using it for is the sliding pins in brake calipers; on many European cars they want a 7mm INBUS / Allen socket, (not standard) and always are pointed inwards. A normal ratchet has perhaps 15-20° angle to work with, which is quite enough for the air ratchet to get in and drive the pin in or out as desired in no time.

Would I put lots of money and trust in it? No. Is it impressive for the price paid? Very much so.
Exactly right, it will do what it claims to do and at a realistic price, but if you're looking for a tool capable of doing that all day long, day in day out then you need to be looking at tools designed for the professional, for example a mechanics torque wrench is nothing like the torque wrenches used in car factory where the tools have to be 100% reliable and repeatable performance many times a day.

The bubble LEDs are very cool, and remind me of when I first started playing with electronics in the mid 70s, but I still prefer the warmth of neon orange

If you apply logic to the sum of 1+2*3 then the answer is 9 all day long. When you write a recipe for a Christmas cake, you don't start with the icing and then add the cake, you write the instructions in the order that you assemble the ingredients and do the mixing, therefore the logic say that 1+2=3 then multiply that 3 by a further 3=9. If you wanted the answer to be 7 then the sum needs to be written like this 1+(2*3) which means 2*3 is calculated first =6 then +1=7

@Wolfgang Ultralight at Gießen Lützelinden last week end. He was the flight instructor. No idea yet what happened, most likely nasty error during take off and not high enough to launch the parachute. They are investigating, the trainee survived.

Applying logic is aa appropriate and useful as applying emotion.

If you want to change 400 years of maths, fine. But you will have difficulty convincing other people to change.

Jeez.... I'm sorry I brought it up; I had no idea I was going to start a war with my poor fucking mentally defective little pocket calculator. This has gone WAY beyond the usual tongue-in-cheek RPN Wars; now it's getting ideological.

I have short truck with that kind of nonsense; ideologues and their singlemindedness are responsible for the obliteration of so many things in modern society; and every last one of them can go straight to Hell. I will tolerate pretty much anything except INTOLERANCE. The world is CHANGING... we need to be willing to embrace change too.

Fuck people... it's just numbers... it's not like the universe runs on math or anything... ;)

Also known as operator precedence and associativity in virtually every programming language ever! See the C precedence and associativity rules for example: https://en.cppreference.com/w/c/language/operator_precedence

Note that all the ordinary *binary* (note this means binary operation in this context...NOT binary numbers!) mathematical operations associate left to right with precedence defined in the standard way. Unary operators and compound operators such as a compound assignment (`+=' for example) associate right to left.

It's also worth mentioning that there's a good reason for having one standard way to define how binary operators work...without a standard way of doing things almost nothing mathematical would make any sense.
