I'm with bd on this one. Leave me the fuck alone and I can be perfectly civilized.  ;D

Exactly that  :-+

Edit: got to whinge here actually. My neighbour, in her 80s and deaf as a brick, ambled out of her house earlier while I was trying to quietly load something into the bin. This resulted in a 10 minute conversation about nothing out of obligation. Yet I felt compelled not to mention the fact that she takes her hearing aids out at night and turns her television up to 11 between 21:00 and 23:45 every damn night. Look where being civilized got me >:(. Moat it is.

...and now on to something completely different...

mnem, you inspired me by hinting me to those ridiculous cheap chinesium DC Stepup/down buck converter you used for your variant of an isolated T12 soldering station.
I just ordered three different types of them from 200W to 300W (!) nominal power.

I'm curious to investigate their properties (esp. under load/pwm-switching load) and to compare them to the isolated MeanWell DC/DC-converter I used that costs more than all those cheap DC Buck Booster all together.   :box:   :)

The MeanWell converter has 120W rated power and its housing is stuffed full of components -unlike the cheap non-isolated Buck Booster with 200W to 300W rated power. Obviously the cheap, non-isolated Buck Booster only have a coil as part of the switcher in them and have no transformer for isolation purposes in them.
The power rating sounds like a PMPO-rating, though.  :bullshit:

You want to make sure the ones you order are both CV AND CC. Many of them on the bay of Evil are not. Set your CC limit to 6-8A (8A is more than these SHOULD be able to draw at 28V) depending on your primary power source. My intent was to add a IEC modular cord and a XT-60 plug for portable operation; one of these days I'll get around to it. ;)

Good luck!

mnem

Yes, I head an eye on that, all have two trimmers, one for CV one for CC.   :-+

Do I need luck?!   :scared:   :-DD

The PO bothers me when I have to do something other than throwing prepaid post at the counter. Plus I've had a very long history spanning at least 5 counties of ripping the person on the counter a new arsehole after they have tried to purposely mischarge a customer profitably.

What goes around comes around.

Live somewhere more civilised (and be more civil(ised)) :)

I'm with bd on this one. Leave me the fuck alone and I can be perfectly civilized.  ;D

That is indeed the British way, especially when on public transport.

Im not claiming bd is in the wrong, because it takes two to tango and two to have an argument (Monty Python notwithstanding).

As an analogy, for work I've entered the US in New York, Chicago, Boston, Denver and San Francisco airports. The immigration staff at SF were politely efficient. Chicago were relaxed and friendly. NY were rude and confrontational. Boston and Denver were anodyne and forgettable. I get the feeling the cities were the same.

Well, another topic:

My wife and I are currently looking for a house to buy.
In support we decided to increase the amount of money we monthly safe.
That reduced my TEA-budget noticeably.   :-\

I have a local offer of a HP 6060B 60V/60A/300W electronic load for 350,- EUR.
Reasonable price? Should I risk trouble with my wife over it..?   :-//

Yeah, well, I can viscerally relate to both sides of that situation!

Too packed into a small space is likely to be unpleasant. More space does tend to be more civilised. Move somewhere with more space.

Yep, the NYC folk tend to be rude and confrontational. Upstate here we tend to be more laid back. And you've heard me complain every Autumn about the city folk coming up here to pick apples and view the foliage. It's like the Mogul Horde. At the end of this month they'll be gone, until next Autumn.

Ever hear of "A New York Minute"? It's about 5 seconds...tops.  :-DD  If you tell a New Yorker "just a minute" the 5 second countdown has started.

Neighboars are too dangerous for that. If you miss them, they might tunnel into your house.
So:

Great in theory, but the real problem begins when older age starts to bite in your late 70s, tidying up all the stuff, keeping the grass/weeds down let alone running a household - then some bastard like me comes and scrubs your driving licence - then you are really stuffed. Also no/minimal home services for the older person out in the bush.
Whoah! Watch where that landed we might need it later.
