    My mother (trained physicist – retired, natural born troublemaker) had an interesting theory:

    Do you think the person who sent this device in had deliberately changed the resistor to the wrong value as an imaginative way of breaking it, in the hope you would spend hours futilely

    trying & failing to troubleshoot it using the usual techniques?

    It definitely looked like it had been resoldered at some point… [*Evil Chuckle*]
