HRC fuses for DMMs (6x32mm)?
« on: February 18, 2016, 04:32:09 am »

I just noticed that the smaller HRC fuse in Brymen BM235 doesn't seem to be readily available from the usual sources (Digi-Key, element14, etc..), or its just doesn't want to show up in searches... (?)

Fuse that comes with the meter is made by Siba and has part number 70-172-40/0.4A (or 701724004)
Manual lists it as "0.4A/1000V DC/AC, IR 30kA F fuse or better; Dimension 6x32mm"

Any suggestions for reliable supplier for this or equivalent fuses?

I guess I should have said in small quantities and for reasonable prices :)

The 0.4A version seems rather rare, not many places (outside shady eBay sellers) selling them in smaller than 100qty packs.

I noticed that 0.5A version is much more readily available, probably because its apparently same as "Amprobe FP500" fuse, and these are available in 4 packs for like $7 USD...

If Dave is going to distribute and sell the BM235 with his branding, he should also be carrying the proper replacement fuses too, IMHO.  The other thing that buyers should do is buy replacement fuses with their multimeters so they don't have to wait after the inevitable mistake of blowing one. They are meant to be sacrificial and therefore a known failure point by the seller and the buyer.

I am an EE in the USA, and I made the mistake of measuring a voltage after doing a low current measurement. This is a very common mistake... Yes I feel silly. However I am also looking for the BM235 Fuse and have not been able to locate a easy supply for a reasonable price. I understand that this is a HRC fuse for a DMM and I will not slap in a common glass fuse. It would be nice if Dave could stock the fuses so when the inevitable occurs you can easily replace it.

I found an Ebay seller in the UK selling these. It looks promising. I am purchasing a pack of 10. If anyone is interested in purchasing a single please PM me and we can work something out.

You can use the 500mA fuse in any case, it is there as potection against gross overcurrent, and thus the actual value is not too much concern within limits. You could even use a 300mA fuse and it will survive 20s of 400mA in most cases. So, but the 500ma ones, in a pack of 4, and keep the 3 spare for next time.

With the cheap multimeters I tend to buy a pack of glass fuses and put it inside the case, so I will have a spare fuse when I do pop one. Most cheap meters ( those that actually have a fuse, the real cheap ones costed that out long ago and replaced it with the thinnest PCB trace you can use instead) have room in the case for a pack of 10.

Anyone find a reputable online company, (I'm in the US) that sells both types of replacement fuses at reasonable prices? BM235 model.

I looked at both Mouser, and GreyBar, both large companies, but a single large fuse is over $40/each, and of course I can find them on eBay, for far less, but I have no idea if they are Chinese clones, since China is the source. The price range between them is crazy, 3 large fuses cost as much as the base meter. THANKS!

I have stock of both the 6x30mm 400mA 1000V HRC and 10x38mm 11A 1000V HRC
Only problem is how to sell them.
They come in boxes of 10 for the 11A and 20 for the 400mA
To sell smaller I'd have to re-bag and label.
What QTY would people prefer to buy, and don't say 1-off  :P

Too late for me:

But glad to see you'll make it easier in the future!

As per your earlier post, a kit containing 2 x 11A and 5 x 400mA sounds reasonable.

Count me in for 1 off  >:D   (kit...)
