Muppet: "Can you fix it?, I think it is a fuse blown. It just stopped to work..."

Me: "Let me see"

(Attachment Link)

I should stop to fix stuff for free to my friends... they are getting above the pain in the ass limit...

That's a 5 minute fix, so why bother, just do it and win the points. What you should not do is offer to pull out the missing pin from the live receptacle...

Just as well I buy tools from Lidl then, they come with a free 3 year warranties, never had an issue with them yet.

Parkside is the Lidl brand.  I've got an air driven ratchet from them. It is extremely good at consuming air, and it is   >:D |O loud, but it pulls 65 Nm as advertised (according to my quick tests against a Norbar torque wrench, that is.) and is quite nice when you've got a tedious job at an awkward angle. One thing I'm using it for is the sliding pins in brake calipers; on many European cars they want a 7mm INBUS / Allen socket, (not standard) and always are pointed inwards. A normal ratchet has perhaps 15-20° angle to work with, which is quite enough for the air ratchet to get in and drive the pin in or out as desired in no time.

Would I put lots of money and trust in it? No. Is it impressive for the price paid? Very much so.

@bd any more word on the 5G Muppet? Seems I will have to be more insulting or add a link next time as my comment still exists  >:D

Look like YouTube finally suspended his account (Anth0ny St33le). It's about time.

For those who're interested in such things, I discovered this poor little aPF 4-banger on my first trip to the Thrift in months; it was all alone, neglected & unloved in a baggie on the wall for $2.99. It has those bubble LEDs where each segment is itself segmented into multiple chips; I've always loved these and the bubble LEDs with the rounded numbers that looked like this:

I've included a bunch of pics of it nekkid while I was doing cleaning... enjoy. :-+

*toddling off to ded*

bubble leds and an = key.................beauty eh.
Only if it gives the mathematically correct result to "1+2*3=". If not, then even the Sinclair Scientific would be more accurate :)

I'd prefer an ambiguous calculator that answers... Could be 7, could be 9, who the fuck knows?

The answer using normal maths is unambiguous:7. Remember BEDMAS from school?

It's interesting how dogmatic many people get about something which is essentially an arbitrary shortcut and convention. I'm not saying you do, mind. :) I feel there's an important lesson about our upbringing and what we feel is true in there.

In this respect I do believe more in Bronstein/Semendjajew or David Hilbert or Carl Friedrich Gauß then in Mr. Scram or some obscure YT-Videos.   ;)

Edit:

Arrgh! Just watched the first 90 seconds of this video and it makes me cringe!   :--

8-2+1 is always always 7.  The guy in the video states implicitly that -2+1 becomes -3 which is ugly wrong!
Arrrgh!

Really! I stick to Bronstein and not to some idiot YT morons.

There are reasons for the convention. It isn't arbitrary. Ask proper mathematicians.

There are other conventions which are used in other circumstances.

Apart from that, conventions are important for communication. If you don't understand that, try communicating in a language with few conventions in common with English. Finnish, Hungarian and Basque are local examples.

There are indeed reasons for the conventions and they aren't wholly arbitrary. The problem is that not a single convention is taught, which is compounded by each version being drilled into children as universal and dogmatic truth. Just look at how many of the discussions start with a variant of "I was taught this in school" which in fact is exactly what happened here. :) Conventions are important but as soon as more start to conflict their usefulness quickly evaporates. At that point it's important to concede they are merely conventions instead of getting stuck on them.

I don't expect people to reach any kind of agreement on this. In fact, I expect them to vehemently disagree. Things being drilled into people at a young age seems to be remarkably effective.

Without wanting to be unpleasant, it's essentially an argument from authority.

I remember that when teaching PEMDAS my math teacher repeatedly omitted an association convention, picked one only upon being cornered about it, told me off for bringing it up because she thought it was unnecessary, and then flipped conventions later and denied what she said earlier.

It really bugged me at the time, but in hindsight it was a great meta-lesson about how authority and incompetence interact, and the meta-lesson has been far more important to my life than deciding whether 1/2*3 is 1/6 or 3/2.
