Tariffs
« on: April 03, 2025, 05:32:45 pm »
Any plans? Strategies?

I guess one strategy is doing the same thing we did in 2020 and just design as generic as possible. Have board variants and multiple footprints for competing chips.

I'm not sure how this new thing will work. Is it a tax on top of tax that I'm paying to get stuff from aliexpress? If so, I already bought major stuff. I got Aixun H315 air and Aixun T420D is suppose to arrive in couple of weeks. The rest would be parts clients will be paying for. Does that mean the tariffs are an additional tax people would pay on top of the sales tax?

I honestly don't get it.  :-//

All I know is that Russian Federation is not taxed, that's because of a ton of titanium United States is buying from Russia all the time. It would suck to pay money on top of that I guess, because that stuff is expensive.  :-DD

Not only titanium but all sorts of rare stuff, during the so called cold war CIA had setup several front companies to buy this stuff from Soviet, and as history goes the Soviets knew perfectly well and played along as they as Gorbatjoff once replied to an American journalist (yes back in those days there where 1 or 2 journalists) on the question of the Cold war, quote: You had your MIC and we had our MIC.
zio Don knows jack shit he just do what the globalist bankers tells him. The tariffs will last 1-2 months max, so why redesign and swapping chips etc at all.

The amount of fake news and misinformation that Trump has spread, as an excuse for the tariffs, is beyond imagination.

An amusing feature of these newly-announced tariffs is the choice of some incredibly small nations or territories, including St Pierre et Miquelon (the only remaining French territory in what was Canada):
https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/03/business/trump-tariffs-uninhabited-islands-intl-hnk/index.html
It was too difficult to calculate actual reciprocal tariffs due to complicated actual tariffs in different countries.
Therefore, trade balance results (easier to obtain) were used as a "proxy" to levy tariffs against different countries, as posted by the US Government today:
https://ustr.gov/issue-areas/reciprocal-tariff-calculations
From that document:  To conceptualize reciprocal tariffs, the tariff rates that would drive bilateral trade deficits to zero were computed.
Basically, to calculate the new tariff rate the algorithm divided the trade deficit by the total exports, assuming that a tariff would fix the deficit.
This assumed a value for "price elasticity of import demand, ε, was set at 4."

If you are not affected, nor is anyone else, why stick your nose into it?

How does a tariff on an uninhabited island that produces nothing affect you?

It's evidence of the great amount of thought put into the decree.

It hints at the arbitrary whim of the entire tariff plan, which could see tariffs applied to anyone for any or no reason.

1920s Prohibition is no longer important to me, either.
However, during that era, St Pierre et Miquelon apparently had a drinking problem.
The Canadian authorities carefully noted all the whiskey exported from the Dominion to the French territory, but there is no American record of imports.

Well.....

In the meantime, I was on the fence about a siglent AWG upgrade, but this pushed me over and I just ordered.

I figure in a month or so the SDG 1064x will be going for what I just paid for the SDG 2042X.

Not sure how he intends to grow coffee in the US though.  That worries me.

The timber industry in the North East USA is hit hard.  There are not that many mills and the tariifs hit dressed timber returned to the US as finished lumber.  Gets hit by Canada on the way in, by the US on the way out.

Who knows what Hydro Quebec will do; the NE increased reliance on electricity in general, and reduction in fossil fuel generation makes us rely on Hydro Quebec to meet the increased heating demand as homes switch to heat pumps.  And HQ must serve their primary customer base first in winter.  And there already was talk of using electricity as retaliation tool.

A lot of pain is coming down the pike.

He doesn't appear to be any worse than any other politician making up nonsense to justify their policies. I just find it odd how people get more upset about it when he does it.

The Chinese call Trump the nation builder. Or Comrade Nation Builder.

The Chinese nation, that is.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

If that's not the case for your politicians, then good for you, but our government take it to a whole new level: they tell more lies than truths.

Kona...they could expand operations.
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

I’m still stumped as to what database lists Heard Island as a trading entity.

My quick Google suggests this site?

https://wits.worldbank.org/tariff/trains/en/country/USA/partner/HMD/product/all

Maybe Elon’s script kiddies just scraped the data?
