I dunno, I think bazzatron’s suggestions are very sensible.

If they’d said “do not reply to replies within a few hours” and “do not advise immediately when items are sold”, your “people have lives” comment would be fair. But to ask people to eventually update the post is not asking too much.

That wasn't what he said at all. He was calling for the banning of other members because HIS messages were not responded to. It is the 'banning' that is out of order.

In the last year or so I have spent most of it in off the forum because of what I am doing personally and that meant even DM's that went unanswered for months. I would be more than pissed if I found myself banned because of some rule like was demanded!

In this situation editing your post to reflect your response time is appropriate. This allows others to understand you're not promising any urgency. They can set their expectations from there.

It is a waste of the collective populations time to keep sending messages to nowhere.

A single abandoned FS post could waste 100s or 1000s of peoples times.

The other solution to stop future people also wasting time is to make a post to the original thread

"I PM'd this person 2 weeks ago and got no response"

Thus fixing that part of the problem.

I assume you were a good citizen and did this on the FS post that you found abandoned?

Other forums have posts in the for sale section expire after 30 or 45 days (expired ads are either deleted, or moved to an expired/completed locked sub forum). That might be helpful here too.

Not needed. If the op is not responding someone can simply post that in the thread, then everyone knows. If you are a polite person you should edit in your availability in the first post. None needs threats or banning and if the persons slow to respond let the thread die away like every other thread.

This has been around since the dawn of the internet and works fine.

Is it possible to exclude the Buy/Sell/Wanted from our post counts? Other sites do this where the general forums add to your post counts but the classified sections do not.

One benefit from this is that scammers that only attack the Buy/Sell/Wanted section will stay at 0 posts and not be able to send private messages.

With SMF you can set a flag for no PM's under any post count you like. I am not sure if Dave has this set? But sub 10 posts would sort out most of the trash. Much easier/safer to work with the normal core than try and make a Section specific mod.

That's correct, however, if the public spam posts count towards that requirement, they can send PMs. Which is already what happens. Spam/scam 2 ads, then spam/scam in PMs.

Since they only spam the classifieds, removing post count from that section removes the PM problem, without making it more difficult for noobs to get help in other sections, or legit noobs that want to buy stuff.

The issue is to do that will take a 'mod' that as far as I am aware doesn't exist or a modification to the SMF Core which is absolutely a disaster waiting to happen next time the Forum gets an upgrade.

Spam/Scam PM's happen across all parts of the site too. Last time I had it was in the Thermal Imaging section with someone trying to flog me a 'cheap' camera.

The sensible thing is to try and sort out which setting is Borked in the User groups. The tag beside our avatars with Contributor, Super Contrib..... is based on those groups as set by Dave way back when and they are based on post counts. You can actually mod or add those anytime you like and give them attributes or restrictions already.

It's allegedly a built in feature of SMF to exclude specific boards from post counts. I dunno though, I haven't run SMF before. I might install it on a test server to try it out though.

It gets used for that purpose here too and it works fine at 1k posts to isolate part of the forum so it is just a wrong switch or and incorrectly set group to tweak the 1 to 10. Last SMF Forum we ran ALL first posts were modded (sorted out most of the driveby rubbish) and sub 10 no PM's.

As a basic assumption USD == GBP == EUR, listing with an approximate price in any of these gives a sense of the order of magnitude of the asking price.
